WHAT IS INFORMATIVE SPEAKING?

 “A speech that has a goal to explain or describe facts, truths,


and principles in a way that increases understanding”

 Answers questions about a topic (who, what, where, when,


why, and how)

 General purpose: To inform

INFORMATIVE SPEAKING
 Intellectually stimulating : consider depth and breadth

 Relevant : how is the topic/point important to your listener?

 Creative: conduct good research; give yourself time; think


productively

 Memorable: use repetition, transitions, humor, mnemonics,


and acronyms

 Address diverse learning styles : feeling, watching, thinking,


doing dimensions

 Description

 Definition
- Classifying it and dif ferentiating it from similar ideas
- Explain a word’s derivation or history
- Explain a word’s use of function
- Use familiar synonym/antonym

 Comparison and contrast

 Narration

 Demonstration

 Expository: provide carefully researched, in -depth knowledge


about complex topic
