CONCRETE SECTION

ENLARGEMENT
(REINFORCED CONCRETE JACKETING)

Page 1
Concrete Section Enlargement

This method involves placing additional

reinforced concrete to an existing
structural member. A member can be
increased by casting an overlay or by
jacking form.

This method is very efficient in increasing

the shear capacity of columns and beams.
It can be achieved when new stirrups are
applied and are covered with new concrete
layers.

Concrete Section Enlargement

This method of strengthening involves

placing additional bonded reinforced
concrete to an existing structural member
in the form of an overlay or a jacket. With
section enlargement for columns, beams,
slabs, and walls can be enlarged to
increase their load-carrying capacity or
stiffness.

A typical enlargement is approximately 2

to 3 inches for slabs and 3 to 5 inches for
beams and columns.

Stages of Section Enlargement
1. Temporary Supports.
2. Removal of the deteriorated concrete.
3. Corrosion removal from the exposed
reinforcement.
4. Surfaces cleaning and preparation to
ensure bonding with the repair
material.
5. Replacement or addition of the
supplementary reinforcement.
6. Reinforcing protection (in some cases)
7. Formwork and applying of the repair
material.

Advantages & Disadvantages
Advantage:
•Enhance Strength and Increase Ductility.
•Increase load-carrying capacity.
•Increase shear capacity.
•Technique is easy and it does not need
special design criteria.

Disadvantage:
•Increase in the concrete member size.
•The need to construct a new formwork.
•When the stresses are much, the newly
casted concrete section may end up
cracking or debonding from the existing
concrete.
•Corrosion may occur when newly
reinforcing bars placed in close contact
with the existing concrete that may be
undergoing corrosive processes.
