Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product

use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
1. Shot that shows a link between lyrics and visuals

This image shows a clear link between the visuals and lyrics of the song . As the
masked character who represents the devil in the music video has his hand on the
artists shoulder as he sings the chorus of the song which includes the lyrics “Devil
got a hold on me”. I chose to include this two shot in my music video as it is a literal
interpretation of the lyrics and shows the music video to be a illustration video
which also shows my video to follow aspects of Andrew Goodwin's theory.
2. A shot that typifies the way a record company would
want their artist to be represented

The inclusion of this shot can be seen to challenge the expected conventions of a typical
music video as the action of smashing up a guitar can be seen to have negative
connotations due to the use of this act buy rock n roll groups of the past. This may signify to
the audience that the artist is inspired by such artists/bands and therefore would not be
the way the record company would want their artist to be represented.
3. A shot that illustrates how your video uses music
genre

This shot helps signify the genre of the audience to be folk rock music. The reason for this
being is firstly the location as the majority of music videos form this genre are set in
rural/nature dominated places similar to the one seen in the above shot. Also the inclusion
of the guitar is another signifier of the genre as it is not uncommon to see artists/ bands
from this genre playing the guitar to their song for example: The Dead South and Mumford
and Sons.
4. A shot that shows an intertextual reference

This shot relates to Bear’s Den and the music video for his song Agape which is from the
same genre. In the video Bear’s Den is seen stood on top of a isolated cliff looking into
the camera performing. I decided to recreate this shot for my music video as I felt it was
an effective one and also allowed an interesting use of camera to be explored.
5. A shot that demonstrates your use of lighting

Throughout my music video I used natural lighting the reason for this being is that it further
signifies the genre and links into the natural atmosphere that is often created in folk rock
music videos. The natural lighting also keeps the artist in the foreground well lit drawing the
audiences attention to him.
6. A shot that demonstrates your use of camera

This low angle shot was used in order to portray the connotations of the artists name
‘Accidental Hero’. Often low angle shots are made to look people look powerful and strong
and are often used in films involving superhero's, so this shot was used to simmarlily make
this ‘accidental hero’ look powerful and portray to audiences that he is a real hero in order
to boost popularity.
7. A shot that demonstrates your use of mise-en-scene

This shot shows the costume, props and location. The formal attire follow genre
conventions and shows similarities along with the prop that is the guitar to The Dead
Souths ‘In hell I’ll be in good company’ which is very similar in the use of costume and
props. The mise-en-scene is rather simplistic but the target audience of the folk rock genre
would find the video entertaining due to the older demograhpic.
