Through this lesson, students will use prior knowledge and real
world connections to discover what patterns are and how they

impact our everyday lives. They will accomplish this through group
discussion and real world connections.

Students will complete a clear and cloudy exit ticket. This is a way
for students to let me know what made sense to them, what is

clear, and what they need some more information about, what is
cloudy. They will complete this on notebook paper.

Students will be doing Think-Pair-Share and writing responses in their

INBs. This will allow me to see and hear what they are thinking about

this unit and where we need to go from here. I will also look at the
clear/cloudy exit ticket to prepare lessons for the next week.
Instructional Procedures
Students will be asked if an ocean can disappear?

They will pick a side and will go to opposite walls.

Then they will be tasked with convincing the other
Opening Hook for Learning side that they are correct.

We will then watch a video about the Bay of

Fundy.

We will be taking notes about tides in our INB.

We will be using the cloze format for our note
Direct Instruction/Guided Practice taking so that all students can keep up and get
the required information added to their INBs.

I will show a table with tide data to the class. The

students will then be tasked with analyzing the
data and creating a question that they could ask
their neighbor based on the information that is in
the table. I will give the students sticky notes to
put their questions on. When they have created
their questions they will place them on the board
then go back to their seats and answer the open-
ended question in their notes.
Independent/Group Practice When the sticky notes have been turned in I will
then pass them back sticky notes to random
students and see if they can answer the question
their peer created. We will use these in a
discussion tomorrow.
Students will begin task card stations analyzing
tables of data, pictures, and videos to predict when
high and low tides can be expected. They will work
as a table group to figure these out and I will be
walking around to answer questions.

If we have time at the end of class we will go

Extension outside and observe shadows and see if we can
find any patterns with shadows.
