CARNAVAL DE PONCE

HISTORY
• Celebrations are held in Ponce, Puerto Rico. They last one week and end the
day before Ash Wednesday.
• It is one of the oldest carnivals of the Western Hemisphere and dates back to
1858.
• A tradition is the appearance of the
vejigantes – colorful costume
traditionally representing evil. They
carry blown cow bladder, making
sounds and hitting people throughout
the procession to beat away any evil
spirits.
CELEBRATION
• Each day there is a different event that goes as follows:
• Wednesday: Vejigantes Party
Thursday: King Momo Entrance Parade
Friday: Crowning of the Child Queen
Saturday: Crowning of the Carnival Adult Queen
Sunday: Main Parade
Monday: Carnival's Ball Dance
Tuesday: Burial of the Sardine
