Chapter -4 ,Ribbed slabs or

waffle slabs
Y.BOOPATHI /Lecturer -CIVIL
Introduction
• Ribbed slabs are made up of wide band beams running between
columns with narrow ribs spanning the orthogonal direction.
Normally the ribs and the beams are the same depth. A thin
topping slab completes the system.
Analysis and design of one-way ribbed slabs
• Long-span floors for relatively light live loads can be constructed as a
series of closely spaced, cast-in-place T-beams (or joists or ribs) with a
cross section as shown in above figure.
• The joists span one way between beams. Most often, removable metal
forms referred to as fillers or pans are used to form the joists.
• Occasionally, joist floors are built by using clay-tile fillers, which
serve as forms for the concrete in the ribs that are left in place to serve
as the celling.
• The girder supporting the joist may be rectangular or T-beam with the
flange thickness equal to the floor thickness.
Typical ribbed slab and slab cross-section
EN 1992-2015 recommended for analysis
Ribbed or waffle slabs need not be treated as discrete elements for the
purposes of analysis, provided that the flange or structural topping and
transverse ribs have sufficient torsional stiffness. This may be assumed
provided that:
1. the rib spacing does not exceed 1500 mm
2. the depth of the rib below the flange does not exceed 4 times its width.
3. the depth of the flange is at least 1/10 of the clear distance between ribs or
50 mm, whichever is the greater.
4. transverse ribs are provided at a clear spacing not exceeding 10 times the
overall depth of the slab.
5. The minimum flange thickness of 50 mm may be reduced to 40 mm
where permanent blocks are incorporated between the ribs.
Effective width of flanges (all limit states)
• EN 1992- 2015 p.N 57 as like a T beam design.
problems
1.The simply Supported 300 mm deep ribbed slab has spans of 6.3 m, and
is required for an office to support a variable action of 5 kN/m2. The ribs
are 150 mm wide @ 900 mm Centres. Assume height of flange is 100mm.
Assume that partitions are liable to be damaged by excessive deflections.
In order to reduce deformations yet maintain a shallow profile use fck=35
MPa and fyk = 500 MPa.
• 2. Check the adequacy of the simply supported Waffle slab over a
span of 7m carries a Design Moment of 210kN.m. The center to
center spacing of rib is 1000mm.
• Thickness of the slab=50mm, Width of Rib= 200mm
• Total depth of beam=250mm, Concrete grade= C30/35
• Steel grade=S460
