Packaging Efficiency

Project

Why we chose this product
● We knew that this product had a non-recyclable material
● We wanted to use ideas we had previously to redesign an Oreo package
● This product has a lot of excess material that we knew we could eliminate with a
new packaging design
● We also like Oreos and thought this would be a fun product to work with
Original Packaging
● Flexible, plastic material
● Non-recyclable
● Excess material
● Not very easy for the consumer to use
Original Packaging
Based on the original packaging analysis, we knew that there was a lot of excess
material and air space because the volume of the oreos was only 74.48 cm cubed,
which meant a total of 99.9 cm cubes of the packaging was unused, and the surface
area was a lot greater than what was needed

VOLUME: 174.38 cm3

SURFACE AREA: 468 cm²

UNUSED AIRSPACE: 57.28%

New Packaging Prototype
New Packaging Description
With the original packaging in mind, we wanted a design that was appealing and new
as well as had recyclable material, and reduced the amount of volume/surface area

● We changed the shape to a cylinder because it doesn’t waste as much material or

use as much airspace and consumer’s use with the new container will be much
easier.
● The lid opens so that you can pour the cookies into your hand without crushing
the cookies rather than struggling to open the old packaging while crushing the
cookies.
● The new design makes it easy for the consumer to take the Oreos on the go and
the cardboard prevents the cookies from being damaged..
New Packaging
VOLUME: 159.04 cm³ The main difference we achieved was the
difference in surface area which means that
the amount of material we used was greatly
SURFACE AREA: 118.34 cm² decreased. With the old material being very
UNUSED AIRSPACE: 44.63% flexible, there was a lot of extra material
everywhere that now has been eliminated.

Difference of Volume: 15.34 cm³

Difference of Surface Area: 349.66 cm²

Difference of Airspace: 12.65%

Original New
Benefits to the company
● Cardboard material will be environmentally-friendly
● The cost of cardboard is cheaper than plastic
● Reduces a lot of excess material (surface area decreased greatly)
● Cylindrical shape of the packaging is easier for consumer’s use
● The packaging is appealing to the customers in stores
Benefits of new packaging
While using the original Oreo packaging you most likely have to eat all of the oreos in
one sitting and you cannot save any for later, but with our cylindrical packaging you
can eat the Oreos whenever and wherever.

This new packaging will also be very appealing to consumers because of its new shape.

The new packaging also fits all components of the old by fitting all of the oreos into
the new container while being less wasteful.
