Structure

An article must include:

• An interesting and informative title (not included in the word
count)
• An introduction which clearly introduces the topic and makes
you want to read it
• Be divided into paragraphs, with one idea discussed in each
• Conclude with a brief summary
Include:
• Descriptive language
• Give opinions
• Linking words (although, however, despite
etc.)
• Rhetorical questions (Do we want to pass our
exams?)
Style and Register
• This depends on where the article will be:
– for a newspaper it needs to be more serious
– for a magazine more informal
• Style and register must be consistent (i.e. you
can’t start informal then become formal)
An example
• This is a sample question with one candidate´s answer. Look
at their grade and the examiners comments on the next slide.
