More examples in a few slides!

Banana Slugs and Redwoods: Slugs eat other plants, trees provide a suitable habitat
(Commensalism [+/0])

Carrying Capacity (Population Over Time)
Threats to the Scotts Valley Polygonum

● Urban development by the population of Scotts Valley Polygonum threatens the

species
● The growth of non-native grasses is invading the habitat of the Scotts Valley
Polygonum
● Its small localized colonies is a threat because if one colony dies there would only
be three colonies left
Food Web
Biodiversity
“non-native annual grassland is the dominant vegetative community” (scottsvalley.org)
Current Solutions
Clean and Inspect Clothing, Gear, and Containers for Weeds

● Many weeds stick to clothing, these weeds can fall off later and create a new
colony

Stay on the path

● Weeds are often picked up when hikers are not on the trail

Leave no trash behind

● Even “organic” trash like apple cores or orange peels can harm the
environment
Our Proposal/Call to Action
Email Lisa Mangat who is the director of California’s State Parks

Or

Email Dan Smith who is the deputy director of the National Park services

To tell them there needs to be improvements in our parks to save endangered species
