History of Videogames

By: Luis Martínez and Fco. Javier Rey

Beginnings I
There is a debate about which was the first video
game.

 For example, if we go back to 1947, Thomas T. Goldsmith and

Estley Ray Mann patented an electronic system that simulated
the launching of missiles against a target. This project can not
be considered as a video game because there was no
movement on the screen.

 Later, the first “ three in a row “was created in Cambridge

University. It was called OXO. It could be played with the
computer ESDAC and the player interacted with the game
through a dial telephone. This was the first videogame that
allows the player to play against the console itself.
Begginings II

 In 1958 it was created what many people think was the first
video game in history, TENNIS FOR TWO. It consisted of a
horizontal line representing the field, a vertical line in the
middle representing the net and a ball. The players had a
controller consisting of a pushbutton, and an analog
control.

 SPACEWARS: This 1961 game, which was played on an

Oscilloscope, was trying to control a spacecraft and
destroy other spaceships that were approaching you. If you
get points, it gets harder. If they end up with your ships,
GAME OVER.
70’s

We started the Seventies (specifically 1967) with the

creation of a videogame that had managed to run a game of
ping pong for two players.
The company in charge of this was ATARI and its creators
were Bushnell and Dabney who baptized the game as Pong.
From the success of Pong, Atari begins to grow in a
spectacular way, with its factories working without stopping
16 hours in a row creating arcade machines of Pong.
This led to Atari to take out new games in the market like
Space Race, Pong doubles and Gotcha. However, none of
these came to get the success of Pong.
80’s

 During the time of the Eighties a big crisis affected the

world of videogames.

 While Nintendo took out games like Mr. Game & Watch,
DK or Bomberman, more and more consoles entered the
market; Atari 2600, Atari 5200 and the famous Famicón to
Japan.

 The following year, the videogame company began to

recover with titles like Tetris and Mario Bros, from Nintendo.

 And in this decade, one of the most important titles such

as "The Legend of Zelda ", "Metroid " and "Metal Gear "
were thankful for videogames lovers.

 Together with these games, one of the most legendary

portable consoles was launched: the GAMEBOY.
90’s
 This decade could be considered the golden age of video games
with the emergence of consoles like the SUPER NINTENDO or NES.

 You also have to mention SEGA with the appearance of MEGA

DRIVE and titles like "Sonic " or "Street Fighter II " The next few years
do not fall short, with games like "Mortal Kombat ", "Doom " and
"FIFA ".

 In 1994, Sony was planning to take out its first console, the PLAY
STATION, which severely affected SEGA due to competitiveness.

 The following year would be full of failures like the VIRTUAL BOY
from Nintendo, SEGA NOMAD or PIPPIN from Apple.

 Three years later it would appear the last console of SEGA, the
DREAMCAST, which was a tremendous failure, taking into account
that its rival company, SONY, was going to take out its next game
console, the PLAYSTATION 2.
MODERN ERA I
 Now, we are in the modern era. At this time they have featured consoles like
the GAMEBOY ADVANCE, which brought back old games like POKÉMON RED
& BLUE, SUPER MARIO BROS 3 or KIRBY NIGHTMARE IN DREAMLAND. In 2000,
finally SONY took one of the most sold desktop consoles in history, to say the
most, The PLAYSTATION 2.

 After a year Nintendo took out the GAMECUBE, a big failure for "The big N ".

 We also have to highlight the launch of XBOX, the first Microsoft’s console.

 In 2004 Nintendo released the "Nintendo DS ", one of the most sold portable
consoles in history, which thanks to the first touchscreen created great games.

 SONY wanted to surpass Nintendo by taking its first portable, the PSP, but its
two versions were a failure.
MODERN ERA II

 In 2005 the new "NEXT-GEN " appears. We see the releases

of consoles like SONY PLAYSTATION 3, XBOX 360 from
Microsoft and WII, which has been one of the most sold
consoles in the history of Nintendo.

 Little by little we are entering the future with the launch of

PS4, one of the most famous consoles in history, for sale
since 2013 and staying.

 Nintendo also took the WII U, but it wasn’t was very famous
because of the negative comments and high prices.
Modern Era III

 Xbox took out the Xbox ONE, which did not have many sales
due to its great rival the PS4.
 Finally, in March 2017 Nintedo gained strength and fame with
its NINTENDO SWITCH, of which 90% of the buyers are satisfied,
being this console desktop mode, on television or portable
mode. Without a doubt, a breakthrough for video games.
 Finally we have to talk about virtual reality. These are glasses
that allow us to believe that we are inside the video game
applying motion sensors. It won't take long to be literally in the
game.
