Cell
the fundamental unit of life
All organisms are made of cells.
All cells come only from preexisting cells.
Cells are the smallest structural and
functional unit of organisms.
Throughout biology, cells are incredibly
diverse and highly specialized.

Cells
•All cells consist 2
compartments:
•Plasma Membrane
(Cell Membrane)
•Cytoplasm
5
Plasma Membrane
• an outer membrane or a barrier of a cell
• composed of phospholipid bilayer
• protects and regulate the movement of
molecules across the cell

6
Cytoplasm
•an aqueous material
contained within the
plasma membrane of
a cell
7
Prokaryotic Cell
• lacks membrane-bound organelles
• structurally smaller and simpler
than Eukaryotic cells
• Cell Envelope includes:
• Plasma membrane
• Cell wall – composed of
peptidoglycan
8
Structure of a Prokaryotic Cell
9
Eukaryotic Cells
• Much larger and more complex than
prokaryotic cells
• Cells contain membrane-bound organelles
• 2 types:
• Plants
• Animals
10
Eukaryotic Cells
Eukaryotic cells are compartmentalized.
They contain small,
membrane-bound
structures called
organelles.

Nucleus
Command center of cell
3 components of the nucleus:
Nuclear envelope (or Nuclear
Membrane)
Contains nuclear pores that allows
exchange of molecules
15
Nucleus
Nucleolus
Gives the dark color of the nucleus under
the microscope
Composed of RNA
Production site of ribosome
Ribosomes aide in the production of
proteins.
Chromatin
Contains DNA of genes, and proteins
Condenses to form chromosomes
