STD PREVENTION

Presented by: Shelby Dugan, Sydney Dugan, Jennifer

McCaffrey, and Olinda Nichols
Healthy People 2020 Goal: “Promote healthy sexual
behaviors, strengthen community capacity, and increase access to quality services to
prevent sexually transmitted diseases and their complications”.

■ Racial and ethnic disparities

■ Poverty and marginalization
■ Substance abuse as a behavioral
risk factor
What’s the need?
■ More than 2 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea,
and syphilis within the United States in 2016

■ Approximately 16 billion is spent on direct medical

costs

■ 58% of reported STD cases in Florida were under

the age of 25

■ African Americans are disproportionally higher when

compared to other ethnicities

Target Population: low-income African

Americans ages 12-19 in Duval County
Program Goals and Objectives:
Our program’s ultimate goal: Reduce the incidence of STDs
among adolescents in HZ1 within Duval county by reducing
high-risk sexual behaviors.
■ Program facilitators will conduct 5 classroom informational
sessions and will receive “very good” feedback on reduced
high-risk sexual behaviors by at least 70% of participants.
■ Learner: Within 3 months after the program, students will
be able to identify the three most common STDs, define
and identify high-risk behaviors, and identify methods to
remain STD free.
■ Behavioral: STD screenings among students that
attended the program will increase by at least 50% over
the following 6 months, condom usage will increase by
50% among this same period, and substance abuse in
conjunction with sexual behaviors will decrease by at least
30%.
Within 5 years, we hope to reduce the incidence rate
for STDs among adolescents in HZ1 will decrease by at
least 15%.
Evidence-Based Curriculum:
Project S.A.F.E
Sponsored by the CDC, this program aims to reduce risky sexual behaviors as well as STDs
particularly among minority women.
■ Reduce unprotected sexual encounters
■ Reduce the number of women having multiple partners
■ Reduce the incidence rate of STDs

Project R.E.S.P.E.C.T
Sponsored by the CDC, consists of two brief counseling sessions, using Theory of Reasoned
Action and Social Cognitive Theory
■ Determine risky sexual behaviors
■ Increase concern for their personal HIV risk
■ Develop strategies to reduce those risks.
Health Belief Model
Perceived Susceptibility- Informational sessions provide statistics to students pertaining
to their age group, ethnicity, and currently practiced high-risk behaviors
Perceived Severity- Long term health consequences are introduced (PID, infertility,
unexpected pregnancy, pregnancy complications)
Perceived benefits- The ability to control one’s own life and future plans
Perceived barriers- Skill building workshops to improve communication skills, counseling
to identify and diminish high-risk behaviors, free condoms and condom instructional training,
access to free screenings as well as follow up appointments in confidentiality.
Cues to action- Condoms in possession at all risky times, visual goals on bathroom
mirrors, text SMS reminders sent to participants phones after program completion
Self Efficacy- Our program aims to permanently boost confidence and assurance by
providing resources as well as assistance during and after program.
Evaluation
■ Program evaluation is a valuable tool used to
measure the quality of a program. It uses a
systematic method for collecting, analyzing and
using data to answer basic questions about the
program to help us improve the program as well
as the outcomes for the population it serves.
■ The main goal is to determine if participants of
our program were positively impacted and to
identify the strengths and weaknesses (more
importantly) to help determine what
improvements can be made for future
implementation of the program.
■ The three behavioral objectives to be evaluated are as follows:
■ Among the students attending the program, STD screenings (whether initial or
subsequent) will increase by at least 50% over the next 6 months.
■ Within the last 6 months, have you been tested for an STD?
■ Among the students attending the program, the use of a condom during their last
sexual intercourse will increase by at least 50% over the next 6 months.
I, or my partner, used a condom during our last sexual encounter.
■ Among the students attending the program, the use of substance abuse in
conjunction with sexual interactions will decrease by at least 30% over the next 6
months.
Substance use (such as alcohol or drugs) were used either by myself or/and my
partner, during our last sexual encounter.
■ Data will be collected using a Quasi-
experimental design with non-equivalent
comparison group pretest-posttest

■ Intervention group and control group will be

tested at two points in time

■ Pretests will be used to determine a baseline

knowledge

■ Post-tests will be given again six months

after the conclusion of the program.

■ Data will be analyzed by our health program
