Introduction to Domains and
Addresses
Every computer connected to the internet is identified by a
unique address.
These addresses locates the computer on the internet.
There are two types of addresses :-

 Domain Names
 IP address
Domain Name System
 Domain Name System : Refers to the systematic hierarchical
organization of domain names.

Domain Name System
 A domain name helps in locating a computer on the Internet.
 Domain Name indicates the country in which the computer is

located and which organization owns it.
 Domain names are organized either on the basis of

geographical regions or on the basis of type of the
organization that owns the computer.
Example :- www.cdacindia.com

 IP Address : Set of numbers, specifies the location of
the computer on the internet.

 It is a set of numbers that specifies the location of a

computer on the Internet.
 IP address has four parts and looks like 202.54.24.230.
 Each part is called Octet having 8 bit number and thus IP

address is a 32-bit number.
 Each octet can have any number ranging between 0-256.
Using the World Wide Web
 Collection of documents and files stored on computer, all
around the world.
 Provides means to access information in a simplified manner
 Web Page : Documents & files on the www.
 Browsing : Searching on Internet.
 Hypertext : Underlined text, connected to a web page.
 Hyperlink : Connection between the web pages.
 Browsers : Software used to browse internet .Examples :
 Internet Explorer
 Netscape navigator
URL
URL (Uniform resource locator) : Links within HTML
documents or address of sites.
 A URL looks like : http://www.microsoft.com
 First part i.e. http specifies the method of access.
 Second part i.e. www specifies the address of the computer.
 Third part i.e. microsoft.com is the name of the file.
 URL is always a single line with no embedded space.
 Some examples of URL :
http://www.mcafee.com/pub/readme.txt
gopher://www.hcc.hawaii.edu
Learning how to browse the Web
 To start browsing the Web, click Internet Explorer icon on your
desktop, which activates your Internet Explorer Home Page.

How to go to a Web page
 Type the Internet address - for example,
www.microsoft.com—in the Address bar, and
then click the button.The home page of
the requested site will be displayed
 To return to the last page you viewed, click the
button.
 To view a page you viewed before clicking the
back button, click the Forward button. To
return to the page that appears each time you start
Internet Explorer, click the (home) button.
 To select a Web page from your list of favorites,
click the Favorites button.
 To select a Web page from the list of those you
visited recently, click the button.
What to do if a Web page isn't working
 If a page you are trying to view is taking too long
to open, click the (stop)button.
 If you get a message that a Web page cannot be
displayed, or you want to make sure you have the
latest version of the page, click the (refresh)
button.
How to Access the Sites
 Double click on Internet
Explorer icon on the Desktop.
 A Microsoft Internet Explorer window will open.
 Type the address of the site on the Address bar of

Searching for Information on the
Internet
 There are some special web-sites on the Internet, which

allow you to search for the desired information on the
Internet. These special web sites are called search engines.
Examples :- Yahoo, Alta Vista etc.
 Open the Internet

desktop.
 Type the address of

the site on the
address bar.
Like
www.yahoo.com
 Click on Go button.
Click in the search box and type whatever you want to
search. And then click on search button.

 Standard language used for creating the web pages.
 Language is written in any text editor

 Documents are named with the suffix .html or .htm

 Use different search engines like yahoo.com,
AltaVista, google and search for information
relevant to your own interest areas. Also
download the pages for offline study .
