N

MAIN PARTS OF A MONASTERY There is an evident use of

circumambulatory path but in order
Buddha Hall to highlight the sacred place a linear
axis path is drawn from the
Scripture Hall entrance
Entrance Hall All major sacred places and objects
have circumambulation(path called
Living Quarters of monks kora).
Open Courtyard Space
HEIGHT VARIATIONS

1 3 4

Gradual increase in height from the

entrance hall to the scripture hall which is
not deep, but is very high.
To give the sacred place importance
monastery height is kept higher than the
residential units around, in Tibet no building
could be as tall as Jokhang temple. The same
can be seen in Shigon Theklheling Monastery.
