 Adequate External openings have been provided in all the
North East South West Buildings for allowing Sun inside the Rooms
BUILDING I  Green Roofs planned for buildings at lower levels
`
 Green Building Materials for providing thermal comfort in the
Building
 Excessive use of hollow walls to create insulation.
`
 Minimum radiation through brick, brickwork kept to a maximum
1 2 : CONDUCTION on sun facing façade ( South West and South East).
 Maximum heat gain via radiation through glass surfaces. Large
glass surface kept on non sun facing facades ( North East ) as far
2 3 : CONVECTION
` as possible.

OUT 4 : RADIATION FURTHUR INPUTS
`
`  Use of light colours on the external surfaces especially the SE,
4 3 : CONVECTION South, West and SW Surfaces, to maximise reflection thus
` reducing heat transfer into the building.
 Specialized heat reflective glazing used on sun facing facades to
` minimize heat gain.

HEAT TRANSFER
DESIGN GUIDELINES

35. Good natural ventilation can reduce or eliminate air conditioning in warm weather, if windows are
well shaded and oriented to prevailing breezes

56. Screened porches and patios can provide passive comfort cooling by ventilation in warm weather
and can prevent insect problems

47. Use open plan interiors to promote natural cross ventilation, or use louvered doors, or instead use
jump ducts if privacy is required

49. To produce stack ventilation, even when wind speeds are low, maximize vertical height between
air inlet and outlet (open stairwells, two story spaces, roof monitors)
TEMPERATURE RANGE
53. Shaded outdoor buffer zones (porch, patio, lanai) oriented to the prevailing breezes can extend
living and working areas in warm or humid weather

54. Provide enough north glazing to balance daylighting and allow cross ventilation (about 5% of floor
area)

17. Use plant materials (bushes, trees, ivy-covered walls) especially on the west to minimize heat gain
(if summer rains support native plant growth)

37. Window overhangs (designed for this latitude) or operable sunshades (awnings that extend in
summer) can reduce or eliminate air conditioning

32. Minimize or eliminate west facing glazing to reduce summer and fall afternoon heat gain
