OBJECTIVES
 To understand the basic concept of political science
 To develop a critical way of thinking in interpreting Politics and Government
 To evaluate how they know and understand the topic
THE MEANING OF POLITICS
 POLITICAL- derived from the Greek word “POLIS” –meaning a cityor the
sovereign state
 Politics is the study of (who gets what, when and how) as Harold Laswell
states.
 Politics is the exercise of power, the science of government, the making
of collective decisions, the allocation of scarce resources and the practice
of deception and manipulation
 Politics - denotes a social activity - is the creation, maintenance and
amendment of social norms or rules. –
 Is an art and science of the government.
 Is the realm of public affairs or the state.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
POLITICS
1. Politics always involves the making of collective decisions for group of
people.
2. Those decisions are made by some members of the group, exercising
power over other members of the group
POLITICAL SCIENCE
 the scientific study of politics

 study of politics, political systems, and governments

 focuses on the theory and practice of government

 theory of state and government

 seeks to study the origin, nature and functions of the state, government
and its all organs universal studied by few
GOVERNANCE
 Is the exercise of power/ authority by political leader for the well being at
their country’s citizens or subject.
 Refers to the manner of steering/ governing and or directing and
controlling a group of people/ the state.
 Governance embraces all of the methods--- good and bad ----- the societies
use to distribute power and manage public resources and problems
