Product application
Styrene is a building block in the production of various polymers which
inlcude the following.

• Polystyrene,
• Expandable polystyrene (EPS),
• Styrene Butadiene Rubber Elastomers (SBR)
• Styrene Butadiene Latexes,
• Acrylo Nitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)
• Unsaturated polyester resin
• Styrenated phenol
• Ion Exchange resin
The styrene based polymers are used in the production of various materials
which include jewel cases, CD boxes, food containers, consumer electronics,
medical applications etc
Product range where styrene plastic is used
•The inner linings of refrigerators
•Microwaves buttons and dials
•Mixers and blenders, kitchen countertops
•Housing and Accessories, building insulation, carpet backing
•Computer housings and keyboards
•Video game consoles
•TVs, video and audio equipment
•Carpets rely on durable backing

Advantages of styrene based materials
Styrene-based materials offer unique characteristics of the following

• Toughness,
• High performance
• Versatile design
• Simplicity of production, and economy.
• Excellent hygiene, sanitation and safety benefits
• Superior insulation qualities for building construction
Styrene – Safe for food pack
Styrene is made naturally by various living things and is found in a
number of foods, including cinnamon, strawberries and nuts. Scientific
studies have shown that the small amounts of styrene consumers may
be exposed to are not harmful; studies have also shown that, should
exposure occur, styrene does not stay in the body for long and is
rapidly metabolized and excreted.
Food Service
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates food
safety and the safety of food contact packaging, has cleared
polystyrene food packaging as safe for both hot and cold food and
drink.

Indian Production
Presently styrene monomer is not manufactured in India. Though,
previously it was produced. It is confirmed by the following two
organisations who import styrene for their captive consumption.

The plant was originally designed to manufacture styrene monomer
through molasses route.
Molasses Alcohol Ethylbenzene Styrene
The process is highly energy and water intensive. Steam required for the
process was produced by coal fired boiler. This process is not competitive
at present and hence PS and EPS are being produced with imported
styrene.
