What is a sentence?
A group of words that expresses a
complete thought or ideas.

Composed of at least one independent

clause.
 What are the two types of
clauses?
Independent Clause
has a subject and verb.
expresses a complete thought.

Dependent clause
cannot stand alone
does not express a complete thought.
 What are the Kinds
of Sentences
According to Structure?
  Simple Sentence
Consists of only one independent
clause containing a subject and a verb and
it expresses complete thought. There is no
dependent clause.
Examples
1. He laughed.
2. She ate an apple.
3. I bought a book.
 Compound Sentence
Consists of at least two independent clauses.

Joined by coordinating conjunctions.(for, and,

nor, but, or, yet, so)
Examples
1. I like an apple but my brother likes a
mango.
2. I helped him and he became happy.
3. He failed two times yet he is not
disappointed.
 Complex Sentence
consists of one independent clause and at
least one dependent clause.

joined by subordinating conjunction

(because, although, since, when, unless etc) or
relative pronoun (that, who, which etc).
 Examples
1. I met the boy who had helped me.
2. She is wearing a shirt which looks nice.
3. You can’t pass the test unless you study for
it.
  Compound-complex
Sentence
 consists of at least two independents
and one or more dependent clauses.
 Examples
1. He went to college and I went to a
market where I bought a book.

2. I like Mathematics but my bother

likes Biology because he wants to be a
doctor.

sentences as simple, compound,
complex, or compound-complex.

1. I made an airplane out of stone.
2. I put a piece of cantaloupe underneath the microscope.
3. Oaties stay oaty, and Wheat Chex stay floaty, and
nothing can take the puff out of Puffed Rice.
4. While fishing in the blue lagoon, I caught a lovely
silver fish.
5. They say if you step on a crack, you will break your
mother's back.
6. They just had a contest for scariest mask, and I was the wild
and daring one who won the contest for scariest mask--and
(sob) I'm not even wearing one.
7. My voice was raspy, rough, and cracked.
8. I opened my eyes and looked up at the rain, and it dripped in
my head and flowed into my brain.
9. They say that once in Zanzibar a boy stuck out his tongue so
far that it reached the heavens and touched a star, which
burned him rather badly.

from Blissful Mountain in the Valley of the Nice.

pout and hired me and Lee to lift the corners of his crumblin'
mouth.
19.If you were only one inch tall, you'd ride a worm to school.
20.The traffic light simply would not turn green, so the people
stopped to wait as the traffic rolled and the wind blew cold,
and the hour grew dark and late.
