Aquaculture Project

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

• Production of fish juveniles

• Production of commercial fish

• On site captive feed production

• Total land required is 5 acres

• Return on Investment period is 24 months (Excluding infrastructure costs)

• Project is self sustainable in 12 months

• High on technology and systems and low on labour involvement

• Project is scalable in incremental steps

Commercial Activities & Revenue Streams

1. Fish Seed Production – by using the method of induced breeding we will be able to
deliver fish juveniles for commercial sale. A small fish hatchery unit will be set up at
the site for this purpose. The hatchery comprises of brood stock tanks, hatching
tanks, rearing tanks and nursery ponds. Maharashtra State is a fish seed deficient
State. The annual shortage is around 20 crore seeds which is being met only partially
from other States in India.
2. Fish Production – we will raise commercially viable fish species at the site. Based on
our market analysis and location we will raise fresh water fish up to table size.
Species such as catfish, pangasius, tilapia and desi magur will be good candidates for
culture. The meat to bone ratio for fish is better than all other animals. The protein
profile (amino acid range) in fish is the most superior.
3. Value Addition Products – tilapia and catfish species are good candidates for value
addition products. The growing export market potential and the emerging organized
retail outlets in India offer us a great opportunity to brand our product.
On site captive feed production

In any form of animal husbandry the cost of feeding or nutrition is the single largest cost
over head. Similarly for an aquaculture business we need to keep the cost of fish feed to a
minimum.

A simple and cost effective way to achieve this objective is as follows :

•Grow aquatic plants

•Feed aquatic plants to herbivore fish species

•Feed herbivore fish to carnivore fish species

This 3 step method will effectively reduce the cost of fish feed and in turn it will impact the
profitability of a well managed aquaculture business.
Total land required is 5 acres

Fish Species Profile – Tilapia
The tilapia fish species is a fast growing and herbivorous variety which is quickly gaining
market acceptance in India. It is also an affordable protein source for millions in India.

Tilapia seeds are available from hatcheries in India. 4 hatcheries have a license.

Stock only male tilapia fish. To avoid in breeding and ensure uniform growth.

In five months we can harvest tilapia fish. Expected weight at harvest is 400 grams.

Tilapia fish are fed on a diet of commercial pellet feed, rice husk and aquatic plants. This
ensures a balanced feed intake a cost reduction of feed inputs.

Tilapia fish is also used to feed the carnivorous fish such as catfish and pangasius species.

Tilapia fish is a good candidate for value addition products. Fish fillets and fish balls are
examples of tilapia fish products which will get us a higher unit value of remuneration.

Tilapia is also an excellent fish for exports to the Middle East market.

Production cost per kilogram – Rs 30

Ex-farm price per kilogram – Rs 60
Retail price per kilogram – Rs 120
Fish Species Profile – Catfish
The catfish species is a fast growing and herbivorous variety which has a huge market
acceptance in India. It is also an affordable protein source for millions in India.

Catfish seeds are available from hatcheries in India. Several hatcheries sell juveniles.

We can also produce catfish fingerlings at our site. Fingerling production of catfish can be
done all year round.

In six months we can harvest catfish. Expected weight at harvest is 600 grams.

Catfish are fed on a diet of commercial pellet feed, waste food and trash fish.

Catfish is a good candidate for value addition products. Fish fillets and fish balls are
examples of catfish products.

Catfish meat is also in demand by restaurants and the food service sector.

The carcass and waste material from the catfish is also used for making fish stock.

Production cost per kilogram – Rs 40

Ex-farm price per kilogram – Rs 70
Retail price per kilogram – Rs 140

The tilapia and catfish farming operations are scaled up incrementally.

Revenue is first generated from the hatchery operations.
Project Implementation

Outlined below is the schedule for the project implementation –

1 Supplementary Feed Systems – set up the aquatic plants and vermiculture beds for
supporting fish culture operations.

2 Fish Hatchery Units – for Indian major carp and catfish species. Brood stock bank has to
be set up. Conditioning of brooders has to be done.

3 Fish Production Tanks – for tilapia and catfish tanks is done in a phased manner. Fish are
fed on a diet of commercial pellet feed and supplemental feed.

Implementation of the project in this manner will ensure minimum capital induction and
create revenue streams at the same time. All expansion work on the site is possible from
income streams without needing external funding.
The project will be self sustaining in less than 12 months time. 100% organic growth through
internal funds.
The preceding slides indicate the nature of activity and the proposed income streams.

Food production is a critical component of our current economy and is a recession proof
activity. Prices are constantly increasing with growing demand.

In the first 12 months we will focus on fish production and income generation from sale
of fish seeds. Once we achieve capacity of 100 metric tons of fish production we will shift
our focus to marketing channels and value addition.

Value addition products, export markets and domestic organized retail outlets are the
most exciting opportunities available to us.

Another feasible option for marketing is to set up hygienic fish shops in areas between
Virar and Dahanu. Small shops of 150 square feet or kiosks selling fish in a hygienic
manner.

Direct marketing methods such as selling via a website or an e-commerce platform can
also be explored with more market intelligence.

Fish and fish products enjoy a tremendous market and we are well positioned to exploit
the unorganized sector with a strong focus on core management and team spirit.
