The Advantages and Disadvantages of Having

Mobile Phones in Schools

Most schools in Malaysia allow students to bring mobile phones to

school now. However, there are still mixed reactions from parents and
school authorities regarding this matter.
The main purpose of allowing students to bring electronic gadgets to
school is in line with the “1Bestari” virtual teaching and learning
programme. It would help students to compete in the global digital age.
Parents who are concerned about their children’s safety and
whereabouts can keep track of them through smart phones with Global
Positioning System (GPS). It will also be easier for the parents to
contact their children in case of an emergency.
However, school authorities worry that students will use the mobile
phones only for chatting and checking their social network accounts.
Students may just text each other or play games on their
mobile phones instead of paying attention to their teachers.
Furthermore, those without mobile phones may feel left out. On top of
that, when the phone rings, it will cause disruptions in the classroom
during lessons. Teachers will have to spend time keeping students’
phones or thinking of ways to stop them from using their phones. If
mobile phones were banned in schools, valuable time can be saved for
teachers and students to conduct their core business of teaching and
learning.
All in all, there needs to be trust between school administrators and
students to ensure that these gadgets will be used solely for learning.
