TOOTH PREPARATION

FOR
COMPLETE METAL
CROWN AND BRIDGES
COMPLETE CAST METAL
RETAINERS

 Best longevity among all types of retainers in FPD

Indications

 Restoration for badly damaged posterior teeth.

 Restoration of choice when maximum retention and

resistance is needed.

 CPD retainers

 In Endodontically treated teeth.

 When Superior strength is required.

Contraindications

 When conservative retainer is indicated.

 High aesthetics is needed.

Advantages

 Greater retention.

 Greater resistance form.

 Greater strength.

 Allows the operator to modify axial tooth contour ( malaligned

teeth )

 Better access to furcation for improved patient oral hygiene

through recontouring of buccal and lingual walls.
Fluting
Cast partial retainers
 Restoration permits easy modification of occlusion ( supra
erupted teeth, altered occlusal plane )
Disadvantages

 Removal of tooth surface is extensive .

 Proximity to gingival margin can lead to
inflammation of gingiva.
 After cementation , no longer feasible to perform
electrical pulp test.
 Non esthetic .
Criteria
 So 1 mm reduction on non functional cusp
(eccentric cusp) and 1.5 mm reduction on
functional cusp (centric cusp) .
Axial reduction

 Axial reduction should be parallel to the long axis

but allow for recommended 6 degree taper.

 Margin should have a chamfer configuration

preferably supra gingival.

 Chamfer = 0.5 mm
Special considerations

 Functional cusp bevel

Functional cusp bevel is placed 45 degrees to the long axis of the tooth
Functional cusp bevel

Guiding grooves for occlusal
reduction
Axial preparation
Retention Form Depends On:

 Length of walls.
 Taper of walls.
 Circumference.
Length of Walls

MINIMUM LENGTH 3 MM.

Taper of Walls
6 DEGREES BETWEEN
OPPOSING WALLS
Ideal Taper
Circumference
Alignment Grooves
for
Axial Reduction
Interproximal Preparation :

 Extend below adjacent tooth contact

 Avoid
 Adjacent tooth damage
 Overtapering
 Excessive axial reduction
Clearance between the external surface of the
proximal chamfer and adjacent tooth.
