DECLARATIVE SENTENCES

What is a declarative sentence?


A declarative sentence simply states a fact or
argument, states an idea, without requiring either
an answer or action from the reader, it does not
give a command or request, nor does it ask a
question. You punctuate your declarative sentences
with a simple period.
Formation:
SUBJECT + PREDICATE.

Examples:

-His name is John.

-Mario plays the piano.

-I hope you can come tomorrow.


INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES

-An interrogative sentence is a type of sentence


which usually asks a question and use a question
mark (?).
-They may ask for information or for confirmation
or denial of a statement.
-They typically begin with a question word such as
what, who, or how, or an auxiliary verb such as
do/does, can or would.
EXAMPLES:

- Do you speak French?

- Will you go to the supermarket for me?

- How can I do that?


Kinds of interrogative questions
1- YES/NO INTERROGATIVES QUESTIONS.
It usually will be answered by yes or no.

For example:
Will you bring your book?
* => Answer: Yes or No)

Did she pass the test?


* => Answer: Yes or No)
2- ALTERNATIVE INTERROGATIVES

Alternative interrogative offer two or more


alternative responses.
Examples:
 Should I telephone you or send an email?
 Do you want bear, wine, or wisky?
3- WH- INTERROGATIVES
Wh- Interrogatives are introduced by a wh- word,
and they elicit an open-ended response.

Examples:
 What happened?

 Where do you work?


4- TAG QUESTIONS
They are sometimes tagged onto the end of a
declarative sentence.

Examples:
- David plays the piano, doesn't he?
- We've forgotten the milk, haven't we?
- There's a big match tonight, isn't there?
IMPERATIVE SENTENCES

 An imperative sentence gives a request, a


command, or expresses a desire or wish.
 Typically, imperative sentences are short and
simple.
Example: (to follow a recipe)
-Squeeze some lemons
-Add water
-Add sugar
-Add some ice cubes.
-Mix all the ingredientes.
EXAMPLES:

- Give some food to the pet.


- Turn on the radio.
- Clean your bedroom.
- Mix all the ingredients
 We can found imperative
sentences in great
literature as well. (the 10
commandments of the
Bible)
 Honor thy father and
mother.
 Do not kill.
 Do not bear false witness
against thy neighbor.
Subjects of Imperative sentences
 The subject is always in the second person and is
always the word “you”.

Examples:
 (You) tell the truth
 (You) leave the package at the door.
EXCLAMATORY SENTENCES

 It is a sentence that shows surprise or strong


feelings. Strong feelings can be excitement,
happiness, fear or anger.
 Sometimes an exclamation sentence starts with a
question word.
Eg: What a lovely surprise!

 All exclamatory sentences end with and exclamation


mark.
EXAMPLES:
-You look amazing!

-Look at that giraffe!

-I am disappointed from you!
