Bilingualism

By: Karla Mae Colina

The Filipino is a bilingual…
Language is…
• Inextricably linked not only to culture but in the Philippines, to
economic survival
• Primary means by which people express their cultural values and
• A way of putting oneself in an occupational stability

…so it is important that language be an essential component of

education.
English proficiency is a core human resource competency that we
have to strengthen if we are to attract more business process
outsourcing providers, particularly call center operators that deal
with the customers of large American firms.

Biligualism
Is a term refer to people who can speak fluently in two
different languages. Studies have shown that children who were
bilingual were better able to identify the semantic relationship
between two terms presented together. Monolinguals tended only
to observed the phonological relationship (lanco-Worrel,1972).
Bilingual Education
Is generally defined as an educational program that
involves the use of two languages of instruction at some point in a
student’s school career (Nieto,1996).
Approaches to Bilingual Education
Transitional Bilingual Education

• Probably the most common model of bilingual

education. In this approach, students receive their
their content area of instruction in their native
language while learning English as second language.
Maintenance Bilingual Education

• Most comprehensive and long-term model. As in the

transitional approach, students receive content area
instruction in their native language while learning
English as a second language. The difference is that
generally no limit is set on the time students can be in
the program.
Two-way Bilingual Education

• This is a program model for integrating students whose

native language is English with students for whom
English is a second language.
Immersion Bilingual Education

• Represents a quite different approach to learning a

second language. In this program, students are
generally immersed in their second language for a
year or two before their native language is introduced
as a medium of instruction.
Bilingualism and Personality
• People who are bicultural and speak two languages may
unconsciously change their personality when they switch
languages, according to US study (REUTERS,2008).
One language sets you in a corridor for
life. Two languages open every door
along the way.
