Approaches to Bilingual Education Transitional Bilingual Education
• Probably the most common model of bilingual
education. In this approach, students receive their their content area of instruction in their native language while learning English as second language. Maintenance Bilingual Education
• Most comprehensive and long-term model. As in the
transitional approach, students receive content area instruction in their native language while learning English as a second language. The difference is that generally no limit is set on the time students can be in the program. Two-way Bilingual Education
• This is a program model for integrating students whose
native language is English with students for whom English is a second language. Immersion Bilingual Education
• Represents a quite different approach to learning a
second language. In this program, students are generally immersed in their second language for a year or two before their native language is introduced as a medium of instruction.
