LARGE LOOP METAL DETECTOR(LLMD)

TRAINING
Training objectives

At the end of the training ,every team member should be able to do the
following ;
1)Be familiar with the components of the LLMD
2)Assemble and dis-assemble the LLMD i.e. understand different
configurations and construction
3)Understand the functionality test procedure of the LLMD
4)Able to use the LLMD efficiently and effectively
What is an LLMD?
LLMD is a deep search metal detector for the
inspection of wide areas of ground suspected to
contain specific medium to large sized metallic
objects.

(There are different types of LLMD.In this project, UXO

PROGRAME PHASE 1 FOR NORTH AND SOUTH KUWAIT
OIL FIELD, we are using EBINGER UPPEX 740)
The Large Loop metal detector EBINGER UPPEX 740
will detects the following objects:
1)ferrous
2)non-ferrous
Components of LLMD

Construction and configuration of the
Large Loop Metal Detector

The construction and configurations will depend on:

 size of UXO
 ambient electromagnetic interference
 natural obstruction
The LLMD can be configured and constructed by Loop or by Frame

LOOP CONFIGURATION
1)small loop-where large configurations are not suitable and where there is lot
of interference
2)compensation loop-to reduce interference from power lines
3)standard loop-normal soils
4)Open loop-for large sized objects

FRAME CONFIGURATION
1)1m X1m
2)2m X1m
3)2.5m X1.5m
Connecting to the Electronic box
How to prepare LLMD for use?

 Assemble and setup the Large loop detector according to the

selected configuration and conduct the functionality test by
following these steps:
 Team member to ensure they are not having any metal object with them during
the operation.
 Connect search loop to the electronic box
 Insert the battery into the battery compartment and connect to the electronic
box.
 Check the battery power by switching the mode selector to position
Battery(Bat)
 Select the detection mode – Lin ,Log ,Slow
 Conduct warm up of the set(15 -20 mins)with the delay adjuster at
between 25-35µsec, ensure loop is at operational height
(approximately 30 to 40cm) above ground.
 Run the test with the metal test piece.
 Adjust the delay switch to reject minerals or small scrap i.e. mild
mineralization (55 to 75µsec)
 Proceed to test pit – Run test on the relevant objects.
How to use LLMD?
There are so many ways of doing manual search
operations using the LLMD.e.g

 Two man operation team

 Three man operation team etc.
Application: Manual search operations I
Three man operation team (version 1)

• Two guys carry the frame, one of them

operates the electronic and
evaluates indications

• Third guy flags indicated suspect points

Application: Manual search operations II
Three man operation team (version 2)

• Two guys carry the frame with search loop

• Third guy operates the electronic and

evaluates indications
Application: Pin pointing targets

For pin pointing a target the frame

is held vertically
Application: Clearance Results

Manual search and cleaning success:

ca. 2.000 m²/day and team
Why we use LLMD
Application: UPEX® 740 M versus UXO Detector I

Search with UPEX 740 M Search with UXO Detector

Application: Manual search operations II
Three man operation team (version 2)

• Two guys carry the frame with search loop

• Third guy operates the electronic and

evaluates indications
Application: UPEX® 740 M versus UXO Detector II
UXO Detector results:
312 flags on 200 sqm

Who pays for removal of scrap?

Application: Clearance Results

Manual search and cleaning success:

ca. 2.000 m²/day and team
Application: UPEX® 740 M versus UXO Detector III
UPEX 740 M results:
12 indications on 200 sqm

Efficient clearance of hazardous

items
