Complements

- A word or word group that complete the


predicate in a sentence.

Subject Complement

• Is a word or phrase that follows a linking


verb and describes or renames the
subject of the sentence..
• Also called subjective complement.

1. Brandon is a gifted athlete.

Brandon is a gifted athlete

-Brandon is the subject


-is is the linking verb.
-athlete is a noun as a subject complement

SUBJECT COMPLEMENTS
Subject complements have two sub groups.

• Predicate nominative tell us what the subject is.

Dr. Pernis is the head of instrucrtions of P.I.T-TC.

Sheila is a nurse.
SUBJECT COMPLEMENTS

• Predicate adjectives modifies the subject of a linking


verb.

They were hilarious.

Your outfit looks terrific!.


Object Complement

• A word or phrase that comes after the


direct object and renames , describes or
locates it.
• Also called objective predicate.
• Direct object or Indirect object
OBJECT COMPLEMENTS
Direct Object- the person or a thing that receives the action
of the verb.

Jake baked a cake.


Jake – is the subject
baked – is the verb(transitive verb)
a cake – is the direct object

OBJECT COMPLEMENTS
Indirect Object – is a noun or pronoun that indicates to
whom or for whom the action verb in a sentence is
performed.
Jake baked Sally a cake
Jake – is the subject
baked – is the verb (transitive verb)
Sally – is the indirect object
a cake – is the direct object
