Bursitis
 Inflammation of the Bursa
(fluid filled sac surrounding
the joint).
A bursa can become inflamed
from injury, infection (rare in
the shoulder), or due to an
underlying rheumatic
condition.
Bursitis is typically identified
by localized pain or swelling,
tenderness, and pain with
motion of the tissues in the

Approximately 3% of adult population
peaks between ages of 40 and 50
shoulder joint is the most commonly
affected, followed by the elbow, knee,
and hip
Risk factors
acute or chronic trauma
RA, gout, tumors, and generative
changes associated with increasing
age
Classic signs
 inflammation,
 local redness,
 warmth, and
 swelling

Tenderness
diffuse soreness radiating to the

interrupted sleep
difficulty walking
difficulty performing ADL

History and physical exam
X-rays
Laboratory test
Management
rest and immobilization of the affected
joint
non-opioid analgesics
ROM exercises
Client education
prevention of additional attacks
moist heat
