TITLE : ELECTROSTATIC POWDER

PAINTING
WHAT IS POWDER PAINTING ?
 Electrostatic painting or electrostatic coating is a manufacturing
process that employs charged particles to more efficiently paint a
work piece.

 Paint in the form of either powdered particles or atomized liquid is

initially projected towards a conductive work piece using normal
spraying method.

 Then, the powder particle or atomized liquid accelerate toward the

work piece by a powerful electrostatic charge
WHO AND WHEN IT BEING DISCOVER ?
 The history of powder coating begins in the late 1940s and early
1950s.
 In which organic polymers were still being spray coated in a
powder form onto metallic bases.
 Dr. Erwin Gemmer, a german scientist, then developed the
fluidized-bed process for the processing of thermosetting
powder coatings and registered an appropriate process patent
in May 1953.
HOW IT WORKS ?
1. Fine particles are fluidized in feed hopper.
2. Powder is vacuumed into the spray gun.
3. A second burst of air increases the particle velocity.
4. Particles are then charged by high velocity friction.
5. Spray gun applies powder to the grounded work piece.
6. Coated part is the n oven cured.
WHERE IT CAN BE IMPLEMENTED ?

architecture/building appliances

automotive
WHY USE POWDER PAINTING

Higher Quality Extremely durable

Environmentally Cost efficient

friendly
ADVANTAGE
 No solvents are used
 Over-spray (up to 98%) can be reused
 More resistant to chipping, cracking, and fading
 Corrosion and chemical resistant
 Coating does not run, drip or sag
 Thick coatings are easily done
 Simple clean-up and maintenance
DISADVANTAGE
 Thin coatings are difficult to produce
 Storage and handling of the powder requires special climate controls
 Colour mactching is somehow more difficult
 Cure temperatures may be too high
 Difficult to coat sharp corners
CONCLUSION
•Electrostatic powder coating is becoming increasingly more important.

•The growth rate of this environmentally friendly technology is far above average.

•Floor space, and personal costs can be keep low through compact plant design and
the possibility to automate extensively.

•Since coating takes place in a closed system, without solvents, there are no harmful
side-effects.

•The efficiency of this technology depending on the recovery system, is up to 99%.
