Objectives • The objectives of these Laboratory Facilities are: (i) to allow students to develop the knowledge and skills required to plan and prepare for, installing (including testing and commissioning) and handover of solar photovoltaic systems. The Laboratory focuses upon grid connected and hybrid PV systems that are within the scope of the Electrical/Electronics Engineering Department with an electrical output of up to 3 kilowatt peak (kWp) connected to both single and three–phase installations. (ii) to provide a facility where electrical engineering practitioners can have access to solar PV systems and be trained on the technology (iii) to provide trainings and seminars for engineers, distribution utilities, and the general public on the installation of these PV systems. EXPECTED OUTCOMES Students, Engineers and other individuals can: • Identify and describe the requirements to install, test, commission and handover of Solar Photovoltaic Systems • Install, test, commission and handover Solar Photovoltaic Systems • Acquire sufficient skills to Install, test, commission and handover Solar Photovoltaic Systems • PERFORMANCE CRITERIA • Identify the health and safety risks and safe systems of work associated with solar photovoltaic system installation work • Identify the requirements of the relevant regulations/ standards relating to practical installation, testing and commissioning activities for solar photovoltaic system installation work • Describe the fundamental differences between a.c and d.c circuits within solar photovoltaic systems • Identify the purpose of solar photovoltaic system component • Describe the types, silicon characteristics and typical conversion efficiencies of solar photovoltaic modules • Identify the fundamental design principles used to determine solar photovoltaic system module array size and position requirements • Identify the preparatory work required for solar photovoltaic system installation Work • Describe the layouts and the requirements for installing solar photovoltaic module arrays • Identify solar photovoltaic system d.c and a.c circuit installation layouts within the scope of the relevant Engineering Recommendation for grid tied systems • Identify solar photovoltaic system protection techniques and components • Identify the requirements to test and commission solar photovoltaic systems • Identify the requirements to handover solar photovoltaic systems On-Grid PV System • 1.5kWp and 3 kW solar panel • 1.5 kW and 3kW grid tied inverter • Mounting frame • Cabling and accessories • Data logging • Test instruments e.g. digital clamp meters, true RMS meters, Instruments • Laboratory Manuals • End-user training • PhP3.1Million
