Over 250 Transcritical System Installations in North America

Approximately 10% are industrial applications
Use of CO2 as a Trans-critical Refrigerant

• Operates as a
vapor compression
cycle or direct
expansion system
• Two stage
• Low stage for
low temperature
• Upper stage for
medium temp
and heat of
rejection
Examples of North America Industrial Projects using
Trans-critical CO2 Systems
Cold Storage Facilities
• Caputo’s - Carol Stream, IL *
• House of Spice – Elk Grove Village, IL *
• Best Foods – Forest View, IL
• Apple Warehouse – New Castle, ON
• Woodman’s Warehouse Freezer – Beloit, WI

Ice Rinks
• City of Anchorage – McDonald Center *
• City of Anchorage – Sullivan Arena *
• City of Anchorage – Ben Boeke Arena *

Biopharma Facilities – various locations

These are only a sampling of the Industrial projects utilizing CO2 Booster Systems in North
America

* Featured in past issues of Accelerate America

Projects
• Systems are getting larger, for example we recently
provided a system for a project that has 36 TR for low
temp and 51 TR for medium temp
• We have an ice rink system with 83 TR for a flooded
CO2 medium temp system
• We are in design using two 160 TR systems for a 320
TR PRW freezer application
• Advansor in Denmark is installing an industrial project
with total capacity of 970 TR with 7 systems
Advantages of CO2 for Industrial Applications
• Due to the potential regulatory challenges with HFC’s, CO2
is being favored over HFC’s
• Future proofing your operation from increased regulatory
actions whether aimed at synthetic refrigerants or ammonia
• Concerns about EPA extension of SNAP de-listing to cold storage
applications that will continue to prohibit the use of certain HFC refrigerants
• Concerns about EPA and OHSA regulations that require more stringent
controls and monitoring of ammonia
 Use of CO2 results in less record keeping requirements
and no full time on-site engineer
CO2 Booster Technology

• HFC-Free System, CO2-Only
• CO2 is a Natural Refrigerant, GWP=1

Understanding Challenges & Benefits with CO2 Booster Systems
CHALLENGES

Increased Capital Cost

CO2 systems do currently cost more
• Driving systems cost reduction to a closer parity with HFC DX systems
• Cases require EEV’s and case controllers
Availability of Refrigeration Contractors
The CO2 Booster systems are similar to traditional DX systems, but require some additional training for installation, start-
up and maintenance that is available through the Hillphoenix Learning Center.
Impact on Energy Performance
With the low critical point of CO2 versus traditional HFC systems, ambient conditions impact the performance of the
systems. Adiabatic condensers and parallel compression are recommended in warmer climates.

Tangible Benefits Intangible Benefits

(Things we can calculate) (Things we know but are hard to calculate)
• Savings on start-up refrigerant charge • Future cost avoidance of HFC retrofits
• Savings on refrigeration installation • Relief from leak & recordkeeping requirements
• Savings on electrical installation • Savings PM program w/ lower cost refrigerant
• Savings on case performance with EEV’s • Better quality product w/ better case controls
• Savings on energy • Impact on social responsibility

that space to be utilized for revenue producing activity
• Eliminates loss of large refrigerant charges and associated
liability
• Ideal for automated demand response programs.
• Standard units can be mounted on rooftop or ground level.
ERIC Patented Control Technology
How NXTCOLD does it and why it’s better:
• ERIC (Electronic Refrigerant Injection Control)
proprietary technology makes the low charge
possible.

• Fully automated ERIC liquid feed modulation

enables use of all evaporator coil surface.

• Eliminates external sensible heat-based control

challenges encountered with DX (Dry
Expansion) systems.

• Electrical efficiency typically surpasses that of

the central ammonia engine room.

BioPCM®:A criticaldifference
Years of study by independent laboratories has proven the energy savings ef-
fectiveness of utilizing phase change materials within buildings. However, most
PCMs were petroleum-based which tended to create a fire risk. Our BioPCM®is a
low-cost, bio-based material which achieves similar energy saving performance
without the negative environmental impacts of petroleum based PCMs. Addition-

Our ENRG Blanket™ is fire tested to ASTM E84 Stan-

dards. Testing to this strict industry accepted stan-
dard confirms that our product meets or exceeds the
safety guidelines of the building products industry.
Additionally, our product is sold in a melt-to-gel for-
mulation so that even in its melted state the material
does not turn into a low viscosity liquid. Laboratory life
testing has shown that our material maintains its ther-
mal performance through the equivalent of 85 years
of life, ensuring a future of low-energy comfort!

Unlike ice-storage, the changes take place at a constant tempera-
