Introduction:
The method we will examine in this session
advises teachers to consider their students as
‘whole persons.’ Whole-person learning means
that teachers consider not only their students’
intellect, but they also have some understanding
of the relationship among students’ feelings,
physical reactions, protective reactions, and
desire to learn.
Background
The Community Language Learning Method
takes its principles from the more general
Counseling-Learning approach developed by
Charles Arthur Curran a specialist in
counseling and a professor of psychomogy.
He found that adults often feel threatened by
a new learning situation. They are threatened
by the fear that they will appear foolish.
What is CLL?
Curran believed that a way to deal with the fear of
students is for teachers to become language counselors.
A language counselor means someone who is a skillful
‘understander’ of the struggle students face as they
attempt to learn another language. By understanding
students’ fears and being sensitive to them, he can help
students overcome their negative feelings and turn
them into positive energy to further their learning.
Non-Defensive Learning:
SAARRD ( security ,aggression, attention, reflection
retention ,dicrimination)
• security: classroom atmospher, teacher's atittude,
student's relations with each other all affect student's
feeling of security teacher should provide a non-
threatening learning envirment
• Attention: it is the learner's involevment in
learning
• Aggression: Learner takes over and demonstrates
what has been learned, using the new knowledge as
a tool for self-assertion.
• Retention & Reflection : What is retained is internalized and
becomes a part of the learner's new persona in the foreign language.
• Discrimination: Students discriminate the similarities and the
differences among target language forms by listening to themselves and
the teacher.
• Similarity: present continuous : she is studying French
past continuous: Tom was cooking
• Difference: John visited his uncle ( regular verb)
John bought new car ( irregular verb)
Principles:
1) Teacher gives clear directions :
 Student raises his hand , teacher comes
behind him
 Student says phrase/sentence in native
language
 Teacher helps him say it in target language
 Record target language only
 Listen to recording
Practics Sentences
• Good morning Buenos dias
• How are you Como estàs
• I am fine thank you Estoy bien gracias
• What is your name? Cuàl es tu nombre?
• My name is Mi nombre es
• Nice to meet you Encantado de conocerte
• Why do you want to study English Porque quieres estudiar
ingles
2) Teacher sits and asks students how they feel
about the experience
3) They listen to the conversation
4) Teacher plays tape again + writes the sentences
on the board + waits for volunteers to give native
language equivalents (Students don’t write anything
down)
5) Teacher writes sentence translation
6) Teacher asks students to relax and just listen
while he reads/plays the transcript 3 times .
Techniques:
1) Build relationship
2) Set time limit
3) Language for communication
4) Human Computer
a- teacher stands behind students
b- teacher repeats , doesn’t correct
c- interaction among students
d- students feel in control /responsible
5) Native language + translation
6) Reflect on experience , talk about feelings
7) Teacher = counselor => he understands, he listens
8) Accepting , non-threatening atmosphere
11) Language Experience Approach : create a story after an
experience ,feelings are the main focus
12) Teacher-student centered : both are decision-makers
13) Creative thinking + self-evaluation
14) Integrative Test : Paragraph writing or oral interview
Learning & Teaching Activities:
1) Translation
2) Group work
3) Recording
4) Transcription
5) Listening
6) Free conversation
Advantages of CLL
• CLL is an attempt to overcome the threatening
affective factors in EFL (lower students'
anxiety).
• The councelor allow the learners to determine
type of coversation and to analyze the language
inductively
• It creat strong relationship among students and
teachers
Disadvantages of CLL
• The counselor/teacher can become too non
directive. Students often need directions .
• some learners may find it difficult to speak on
tape
• It is time consuming to carry out
What is the role of the teacher?
The teacher’s initial role is primarily that of a
counselor.it means that he recognizes how
threatening a new learning situation can be for
adult learners, so he skillfully understands and
supports his students in their struggle to master
the target language.
What is the role of the students /learner?
• Initially, the learners are very dependent upon the
teacher. however, when they continue to study, they
become increasingly independent.
• learning is something that is achieved collabortivelly
• leaners are expected to listen attentivelly to the
knower to provide meanings , to express, to repeat
target uttrances without hesitation also to become
conselors tp pother learners
REVIEWING
THE PRINCIPLES
What are the goals of teachers who use the C LL ?
Teachers who use CLL want their students to learn how
to use the target language communicatively. In addition,
they want their students to learn how to learn from one
another. All of these objectives can be accomplished in a
non-defensive manner if the teacher and learner(s) treat
each other as whole persons, valuing both thoughts and
feelings.
How are the feelings of the students dealt with?
One regular activity is inviting students to comment
on how they feel.the teacher can help them overcome
negative feelings that might otherwise block their
learning.
What areas of language are emphasized?
The most important skills are understanding and
speaking the language at the beginning, with
reinforcement through reading and writing.
How does the teacher respond to student
errors?
One way of doing this is for the teacher is to
repeat correctly what the student has said
incorrectly, without calling further attention to
the error.
Recording Student Conversation
Being able to recall the meaning of almost
everything said in a first conversation is motivating
for learners. The recording can also be used to
simply listen to their voices in the target language.
Conclusion:
The two most basic principles that can take place in
CLL are summed up in the following phrases:
• ‘Learning is persons,’ which means that whole-
person learning of another language takes place
best in a relationship of trust, support, and
cooperation between teacher and students and
among students.
• ‘Learning is dynamic and creative,’ which means
that learning is an ongoing developmental process.
