ABOUT ORRISA
 Orrisa is one of the states in the country which is known for their rich
heritage and lineage of vibrant and colourful culture.

 Orissa was invaded by many rulers in the due course of its history

 It is the ninth largest state by area and the eleventh largest by


population in the country.

 Be it Puri Jaganath Temple or Pre-historic paintings in Kalahandi, the


place has something to offer to everyone.
Konark (Konarka) is true blend of history, culture
and natural beauty. The famous Sun Temple along
with the Sun Festival and the five day long dance
festival make this tiny place an ever hustling tourist
destination in Orissa. The Craft Mela and Handicraft
exhibition organized as part of the dance festival is
also a hit among the locals and the travelers alike.
Displayer of the ethnic Oriyan architecture, the Sun
Temple becomes a beautiful backdrop to this fair. If
all these are not enough, you are bound to love a
long walk on the beach nearby.
Oriya workers, who wished to replicate the
architecture of the Jagannath temple in Puri. The
peak of the temple reaches 21.3m in height. The
temple complex is tinted in the shade of burnt
brick, because of the use of sandstone brought
from Orissa. The main deity is Jagannath (the
main deity of the Oriya people) , who is
worshipped along with his siblings Balabhadra
and Subhadra. The main festival of Orissa, is
celebrated in a big way at the Jagannath Temple of
Puri. Hence, the annual Rath Yatra festival is also
celebrated at this temple, during which the three
main deities are carried out as a grand
procession.
Rourkela is one of the most clean and green city of India, as
it situated amidst dense forests surrounded by a beautiful
range of hills and encircled by rivers flowing through red
soils. The red and laterite soils are found here which are
quite rich in minerals and iron ore. Rourkela is also
considered a ‘Tirtha’, a place of religious sanctity. Asia's
highest Hanuman statue, about 22 m high stands within a
temple complex at Hanuman Vatika. On the outskirts of
Rourkela is a picturesque pilgrimage spot on the confluence
of two rivers, Sankha and Koel with hidden river Saraswati
creates Brahmani here. It is a mythological belief that the
great epic “The Mahabharat” was written by Maharshi Vyash
at this place. The said name of the river Brahmani is perhaps
due to the birthplace of Maharshi Vedavyash. The city is also
popularly known as Ispat Nagar or the Steel City of Orrisa.
Raghurajpur is a heritage crafts village in Puri
district, Odisha, known for its
master Pattachitra painters, an art form which
dates back to 5 BC in the region
and Gotipua dance troupes. Apart from that, the
village is also home to crafts like Tussar paintings,
palm leaf engravings, stone and wood carvings,
wooden, cowdung and papier mache toys, and
masks. In 2000, after a two-year research and
documentation project by INTACH, starting 1998,
the village was chosen to be developed as state's
first heritage village and developed as a Crafts
village, soon the village had an interpretation
centre, commissioned artwork on the walls of the
artists’ homes and a rest house.
Referred to as the cultural capital of Orissa, Cuttack
is a commercial city with plenty of impressive tourist
attractions. Cuttack is the second largest city in
Orissa and is the centre of all commercial activities
and the local handicrafts of this state are displayed
and traded in this very city. Cuttack is always
buzzing with cultural activities and plays host to a
variety of festivals like the Baliyatra, which shows
the ancient trade links the countries like Java, Bali
and Sumatra and the Kite Festival which is held in
the month of January. Cuttack is a highly-planned
city and has a number of tourist attractions which
will make a person's trip here a memorable one.
Bhubaneswar, the temple city of India, once known for its architecture and grand temples, is presently a
thriving centre for commerce and business. Bhubaneshwar is an ancient city replete with beautiful
historic temples which attract pilgrims and tourists from all over the country. The name of the city
literally means Lord of the Universe, rightly reflected in the number of temples here and the religious
fervor of its locals. Bhubaneshwar being the centre for religious tourism has a number of majestic
temples built centuries ago which have still retained their original over all these years. Among them
the Lingaraj temple and the Parasurameswara temple are must-visits and attract tourists for all parts of
the country.
In the southern coastline of Odisha just 15 km from the city of Behrampur is located a quaint, tiny town of
Gopalpur which was a sea port, bustling with trade and commerce, in the Colonial Era. Today, it is one of the
best beaches in the eastern coastline of the country due to its remoteness, its peace and its offbeat crowd. It
is know for being an offbeat destination and a place for relaxation. The beaches are sparkling gold which
along with the azure water of the Bay of Bengal providing a perfect place to relax and immerse yourself in
nature. Besides the beach, the food is also pretty great in the town with many shanties providing tongue
tickling sea food. Gopalpur is rapidly becoming one of the most sought after beaches in the country, with
more and more people becoming aware of its beauty.
The state of Odisha (Orissa) offers adventurous Wildlife tours.
Renowned for its Widlife parks and Sanctuaries in india, Orissa
wildlife is home to a number of rare flora and fauna species.
Having the thickest Mangrove forest and abundant Red Silk
Cotton Trees, Wildlife parks at Odisha (Orissa) have proved to be
the most successful breeding ground for Asiatic lions.

The protected area network of Odisha (Orissa), spread over a


sprawling area of 6611.12 sq. kms, the Wildlife in Orissa(Odisha)
is cradled very lovingly in eighteen sanctuaries, a National Park
and one proposed National Park. These wildlife parks cover about
4.25% of the geographical area and 11.37% of the forest area of
the state.
Few major wildlife spots in Orissa are
Bhitarkanika National Park, Chandaka Elephant Reserve,
Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, Nandankanan National Park,
Simlipal National Park, Ushakothi Wildlife Sanctuary, Tikarpada
Wildlife Sanctuary and Similipal Tiger Reserve.
Even though Lord Buddha had never visited Odisha during his lifetime, the state has a rich
heritage of Buddhism. In fact, Odisha is home to more than 200 Buddhist sites, scattered across its
length and breadth. Here, Buddhism flourished from the 6th century BC to at least 15th to 16th
century AD. The latest Buddhist phase is 'Vajrayana' which is believed to have been originated
from Odisha. Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang visited these Buddhist sites in Odisha in the 7th
century and between 8th and 10th century. One of the most popular Buddhist destinations in
Odisha is the Diamond Triangle comprising Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri in Jajpur district.
There are several places in the state where Buddhism is still practiced today.
