FLY ASH-INTRODUCTION
 It is a industrial waste obtain by burning coal.
 It is used as a pozzolanic material or concrete admixture.
 They are spherical shaped “balls’’ finer than cement particles.

FLY ASH AS A SUPPLEMENTARY:

 Replacement of OPC by supplymentry material “fly

ash”.
 Contributes to environmental pollution control.

 Fly ash used are of two type CLASS F and CLASS C.

FLY ASH IN CONCRETE
Use of fly ash results in reduction of water demand.
Bleeding ,segeration, drying shrinkage will also be
reduced.
Heat of hydration reduces.
Contributes strength due to pozzolanic reactivity.
 Dense texture, Reduces water and gas permeability.

• Although Fly ash is an industrial waste, It has a vast

potential for improving the modern day concrete when it
comes to quality in the long term.
PROJECTS AND THEIR AGE ACCEPTANCE:

Project Fly ash% Age strength acceptance

Naval facilities 25-40% 28-56 day acceptance

engineering

Olivenhain dam 65% 365 day acceptance

San Diego

Washbum airport 35% 28-,56-and 90-day

acceptance
Caltrans 25-35% 42 days
High Volume Fly Ash Concrete
 IS: 456 - 2000, Code of Practice for Plain and
Reinforced Concrete allows replacement of OPC
by Flyash upto 35% as binding material.

 Hvfac was developed by Malhotra and his colleague

at CANMET center in 1980s.

 A sustainable concrete can be made with more than

50% replacement of cement.
Investigation on high volume Fly ash were carried out at
Canada Center for mineral and energy
Technology(CANMET)

(Typical mix proportion of HVFAC)

Properties of (HVFA)
 The properties of HVFA Concrete depends on
characteristics of cement and flyash

 As the water content is low in high volume fly ash

concrete the bleeding is too low.

 Setting time is little longer than that of ordinary

concrete, because of low cement content, low rate of
reaction, high content of superplasticizer.
 Heat of hydration is rather low about 15` to 25`C less than that
of ordinary concrete without fly ash.
 Mechanical properties are good in view of ,lower W/C ratio
and dense micro structure

CURING:
 Should be cured for longer period.

 HVFA concrete should be properly protected from pre drying

by properly covering the surface.
Applications Of HVFA
 It is an economical constructionmaterial.

 Structural application and pavementsconstruction.

 It is used in high rise building, industrial structures,

water related structures, concrete road and roller
compacted Dams .

CONCLUSIONS
 HVFAC provides a good option for recycling of fly ash.
 Characteristics such as resistance to corrosion,
resistance to alkali aggregate reaction, resistance to
sulfate attack, durability getincorporated
 Properties like compressive strength, flexural strength,
modulus of elasticity and tensile strength are
improved.
 Longer time required for proper curing

14
 The prospects of fly ash are still being underused even
today. Thus keeping in mind about environmental
concerns and its indispensability as a mineral admixture,
the values of fly ash should be effectively garnered .
