For gas reservoirs with only connate water saturation, gas relative
permeability equals the reservoir effective permeability.
2. Darcy and non-Darcy Flow in Porous Media
Non-Darcy flow occurs in the near-wellbore region of high capacity gas
and condensate reservoirs:
As the flow area is reduced substantially, the velocity increases,
inertial effects become important, and the gas flow becomes non-
Darcy.
The relation between pressure gradient and velocity can be described
by the Forchheimer (1914) equation
• This is valid for largely incompressible (i.e., oil) flow under steady state.
• For highly compressible gas, the formation volume factor, Bg, varies
greatly with pressure.
• Therefore an average expression can be obtained from;
• Steady State and Pseudo-steady State Flow
• Introducing Bg and expressing gas flowrate in Mscf/day:
which, re-arranged, provides the steady-state approximation for natural gas flow as
• Steady State and Pseudo-steady State Flow
• Pseudo-steady state
• The pressure at the outer boundary is not constant but instead declines at a
constant rate with time, dp/dt=constant
• The production rate expression for a gas well can be written for pseudo-steady
state,
• where the constant αr is the familiar 141.2 in the traditional oilfield units
• For natural gas wells the analogous expression is:
