Introduction

“Employee relations is a critical component of a

successfully run business. Without an effective strategy to
maintain positive employee relations, it can cause unrest
and slow down productivity”
What is Employee Relations???
(2-3 slides)
Background
• The term 'employee relations' refers to a
company's efforts to manage relationships
between employers and employees.
• An organization with a good employee
relations program provides fair and
consistent treatment to all employees so
they will be committed to their jobs and loyal
to the company.
• Such programs also aim to prevent and
resolve problems arising from situations at
work.
What is Employee Relations???
(2-3 slides)

Background

• Employee relations programs are typically

part of a human resource strategy designed
to ensure the most effective use of people to
accomplish the organization's mission.
• Employee relations programs focus on issues
affecting employees, such as pay and
benefits, supporting work-life balance, and
safe working conditions.
What is Employee Relations???
(2-3 slides)
Background

• One of the most effective ways for a company to ensure good employee relations is to
adopt a human resource strategy that places a high value on employees as
stakeholders in the business.
• Stakeholders are people who are committed, financially or otherwise, to a company
and are affected by its success or failure.
• When employees are treated as more than just paid laborers, but as actual
stakeholders with the power to affect outcomes, they feel more valued for the job they
do.
• Think about the last job you truly loved. Was it because you were treated like an
important part of the team?
• You probably had an interest in seeing the business succeed, like a stakeholder.

Legal
CURRENT ER ISSUES :
Legal

• Legal issues such as workplace harassment, discrimination and equal

Conflict opportunity are among the employee relations issues employers must
Management face.
• Employers are obligated to investigate harassment and discrimination
allegations in the workplace and provide a possible remedy to the

Attendance situation.
• Employers also must reasonably accommodate workers who require
modification of job duties because of disability or pregnancy.
• The laws that govern the legal aspects of employee relations issues

Disciplinary Action include but are not limited to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, The
Americans With Disabilities Act and the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Legal CURRENT ER ISSUES :

Conflict Management

Conflict • Conflicts often arise in the workplace between co-workers, as well as

Management between employees and managers.
• When disputes arise, managers must implement specific procedures for
resolution while maintaining optimal working relationships.
• These procedures allow employees to voice their concerns and have the
Attendance
issues resolved internally.
• Conflict management also helps employers document the circumstances
surrounding a particular incident and how the matter was resolved.
• This will assist employers if a similar situation arises.

Legal CURRENT ER ISSUES :

Attendance

Conflict • A strong attendance record and adherence to their schedule is the

Management responsibility of all employees and essential to the employer's bottom line.
• If an employee is tardy, misses work or does not adhere to his schedule, it
affects his co-workers and supervisors.

Attendance • Employers regulate attendance through defined attendance policies.

• An attendance policy defines absence and tardiness and outlines the
consequences for unexcused time away from work.

Disciplinary Action

CURRENT ER ISSUES :
• Disciplinary Action
industry (3-4 slides)

Legal • When an employee engages in undesirable behavior, employers must act to

correct that behavior.
• Disciplinary action is designed to prevent or improve poor performance or
deal with inappropriate behavior.
Conflict
• Employers typically implement discipline gradually based on the type and
Management
frequency of a policy violation.
• For example, a manager may give a worker a verbal warning for coming in
late without a valid excuse.
Attendance • The next time the worker has an unexcused tardiness, the manager may
give the worker a written warning.
• After the next instance, the employer might issue a final written warning
before terminating the employee.
Disciplinary Action • The employer, through this procedure, documents the policy violation and
discourages the employee from engaging in similar behavior again.

ER Strategies
1. Clear written policies

• Employee relations policies describe the company's philosophy, rules, and procedures for
addressing employee-related matters and resolving problems in the workplace.
• Many companies have one or more employee relations representatives, people who work in
the human resources department to ensure that company policies are followed fairly and
consistently.
• Employee relations representatives work with employees and supervisors to resolve
problems and address concerns.

ER Strategies

2. Encourage effective communication among the employees

• It has been observed that poor communication leads to confusions and misunderstandings.
• The communication has to be precise and relevant.
• One should not play with words and be very specific about his expectations from his fellow workers as well
as the organization.
• If you are not very happy with your colleague’s proposal, don’t keep things to yourself.
• Voice your opinion and do express your displeasure. It will definitely prevent a conflict among employees
later and improve the relations among them.
• Be straightforward. Don’t pretend things just to please your boss.
• If you find anything unacceptable, discuss with your superior but in a polite way.

ER Strategies

3. Promote written modes of communication among the employees for better transparency

• Verbal communication is not as reliable as written communication.

• The agendas, minutes of the meeting, important issues must be circulated among all through emails. Make
sure that all the related employees are in the loop.
• Avoid leaving employees out of emails and other written documents whenever possible to maximize the
sense of inclusion. Employees who are left out of these notifications could feel left out and less important
than workers who are included.
• This improves employee relations because employees feel a sense of active participation in the business
and the company's various short-term and long-term projects.

• Management has a great influence on employee relations and the working environment in a given office or
place of business.
• A positive attitude and message when dealing with employees can improve employee relations by creating
constructive working relationships free from bias and discrimination.
• Positive reinforcement helps employees feel valued in the workplace and encourages the communication of
any employee relations problems.
• Basically, communication and employee relations improve when management sets the tone with positive
leadership behavior and constructive, positive feedback.

(3-4 slides) - roles of HR

Implementation
1. The individual taking care of the HR activities plays a
key role in involving all the employees into something
productive which would give them an opportunity to know
each other well.

o Individuals are so engrossed in their daily routine work that

they hardly get time to interact with each other. Many of them
don’t even know the full names of the person sitting next to
their workstations.
o The human resource department must ensure that several
group activities are being organized at the workplace to bring
all employees on a common platform.
o Must undertake certain activities which help in strengthening
the bond among the employees and bring them closer.
o Organize various get together activities at the workplace

Implementation
2. When a new employee joins an organization, make sure
he receives a warm welcome by all.

o The induction program should be conducted at the

auditorium or the conference room so that everyone
can be invited.
o Ask the new joinee to introduce himself well. Let others
know that a new member has stepped into their family
to help them in their assignments.
o The HR along with the line managers must communicate
the key responsibility areas clearly to the employees to
extract the best out of them and avoid dissatisfactions
later.

3. It is the responsibility of the human resources team to

organize various events like sports day, annual day, green
day etc.

o The employees must be encouraged to participate in these

kinds of extra curricular activities. Employees are able to relax
this way and take a break from their routine work. Problems
crop up when the work tends to become monotonous.
Employees should enjoy coming to office, rather than treating
work as a burden.
o The HR in coordination with the team leaders must display the
names of the top performers every month on the company’s
notice board.
o Send a congratulations mail as well. The human resource
professional along with the supervisor can even hand over a
small trophy as a token of appreciation to the top performers.
o Do this activity in the presence of all. The one who has
performed well starts trusting his management more and
strives hard to win many more trophies in the future.
o Everyone is aware about each other’s performance and gets
inspired as well.

4. Consult on New and Existing Policies

o The policies that a company has in place determines the

way employees can act.
o Most companies have sexual harassment laws that
forbid employees from treating others in a negative way
because of gender or sexual orientation.
o Employee relations managers are the ones responsible
for setting new policies and ensuring that all workers
follow those policies.
o In addition to policies relating to sexual harassment,
you may create policies and programs regarding drug
or alcohol use, the way employees act on social
networking sites and how they act around clients.

5. Create Benefits Packages

o Employee relations managers and human resources

managers often work together when creating benefits
packages.
o Benefits packages refer to all benefits awarded to
employees, including vacation time, sick leave,
maternity leave, health insurance and stock incentives.
o When creating one of these packages, you need to talk
with employees about what they want and need,
compare prices from different insurers and decide if all
employees should receive the same package.
o Some companies now offer better benefits for
employees who were with the company longer and offer
fewer benefits to new employees.

6. Act as a Union Representative

o Depending on the industry you work in, you may need to

act as a union rep on the job.
o Unions provide job stability and security to workers who
pay annual dues.
o If a problem arises, a rep from the union will meet with
reps from the company to determine what to do next.
o HR may work as a representative for that union or meet
with one of those reps on behalf of your employer.
o The union will want to know that your company followed
all the standards it put in place and that workers did not
violate any laws.

Conclusion
Research says that if the employees are satisfied with their job responsibilities, they tend
to remain happy and avoid conflicts with each other. Individuals develop a feeling of trust
and loyalty towards their organization and don’t waste their time and energy in
unproductive tasks.
