• To ask for directions, we use questions such as:

Where is the…?
Is there a…?
How do I get to…?
Is this the way to…?

• To give directions, we use phrases such as:

Go straight on…
Continue until…
Turn left/right at…
Go past the…
Take the exit/turning on the left/right.
Cross the…
Go down this…

• To say where a place is, we use prepositions of place such as:

It’s on… street.


It’s next to…
It’s opposite the…
It’s between the... and the…
The… is on the left/right.
It’s at the end of…
It’s on the corner of… and…

Tip: To ask questions we say ‘Excuse me’ first and ‘Thank you’ at the end.

Excuse me, is there a cinema near here?... Thank you.
