INTRODUCTION

• High rise structures may require deep foundations such as piles.

• Groundwater flow is seriously affected by the pile foundation

• It leads to a barrier effect in a heavily built up area.

• May lead to reduction in ground water flow velocity, lowering of ground

water table and some times intrusion of salinity in coastal areas.
LITERATURE REVIEW
GAP AREAS

• Pile foundations are known to influence the ground water flow

• Remedial measures are required to be identified and enforced to mitigate
the adverse effect of deep foundations.
OBJECTIVES
• To determine the effect of pile foundation with the help of experimental
setup

• Identify a proper remedial system such as a highly permeable drainage

channel system which will reduce the effect of pile foundation on
groundwater flow

• To find the optimum position, dimension and shape of such drainage

channels for different flow conditions

• To estimate the cost of construction of this approach

METHODOLOGY - I

• Influence of pile foundations on the ground water flow will be studied for
the following three cases:
CASE1: Setup without the piles
CASE2: Setup with piles embedded in it
CASE3: Setup with piles and the proposed drainage channel
METHODOLOGY - II

• Effect of drainage channels in mitigating the adverse effect of pile

foundations on the ground water flow to be studied
• Parameters to be investigated include depth of trench, cross sectional
dimensions of the trench, head causing flow and the porosity of the infill of
the channel.

EXPERIMENTAL SETUP (EXISTING)

Fig. Side View of the experimental setup

DETAILS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL SETUP

• A box facilities for inletting water and collecting outflow.

• Facility to measure the head near the inlet and outlet.
• Inlets are provided on one side of the box at three different levels through
which water is supplied at a constant head
• Three outlets are provided on the other side of the box at the lower level
• Piezometers are provided at different levels to determine the head
MODIFICATIONS PLANNED

• Providing a height adjustable reservoir with overflow facility to ensure

constant head
Case 1:
• Soil is placed in the box employing pluviation (sand raining) technique to
ensure constant relative density and thus comparable permeability.
• Water is then supplied through the inlets, one at a time, maintaining a
constant head of water
• Flow of water takes place through the soil from one end to the other
• The quantity of water collected on the other end from the outlets is
measured
• Head of water is measured near the inlet and the outlet using pitot tubes.
Case 2:

• The piles are positioned giving external support.

• Tank is filled using sand employing pluviation technique.
• The procedure as in Case 1 is repeated.
Case 3:

• The box is filled with sand after positioning piles.

• Granular trenches are installed in the line of flow.
• Excavation is done with the help of side supports.
• Trench material is filled, again using pluviation technique.
• The temporary supports are withdrawn as the trench filling progresses
• This procedure is repeated with different dimensions, position and direction
of the channel
• After conducting the experiments, the amount of excavation required to provide
drainage channels in the experimental setup is determined

• Based on this the excavation required in the actual site is calculated

• Also the cost of excavation is calculated

• The cost of providing drainage channel is also determined

• Cost of filler materials is also determined

• Other expenses at the time of experiment is also noted and hence the overall cost
of the project is determined

• Based on the approximate cost obtained, the feasibility of this project at the site is
hence worked out
EXPECTED OUTCOMES

• The possibility of mitigating the impact of deep foundations on ground

water flow using drainage channels will be explored.

• Optimum dimension, shape, position and direction of the drainage channel

is determined
