Role of Architects

Professional Practice and Ethics


▪ An architect is someone who plans, designs, and reviews
the construction of buildings.
▪ An architect should responsibly create a design concept that meets
the requirements of that client and provide a facility suitable to the
required use.
▪ In that, the architect must meet with and question the client to
ascertain all the requirements and nuances of the planned project.
▪ Any design concept must at a very early stage in its generation take
into account a great number of issues and variables which include
qualities of space(s), the end-use and life-cycle of these proposed
spaces, connections, relations, and aspects between spaces including
how they are put together as well as the impact of proposals on the
immediate and wider locality.
▪ Selection of appropriate materials and technology must be
considered by the architect.
▪ The site and its environs, as well as the culture and history of the
place should be studied by the architect.
▪ The architect should deal with local and federal jurisdictions about
regulations and building codes.
▪ The architect should often consult with engineers, surveyors and
other specialists throughout the design.
▪ Architect should be the bridge between the client, contractor, project
manager, site engineer, etc. back and forth.
▪ The architect should put forth the tender 0n the behalf of the client
and should help in preparation of legal documents.
▪ The architect should assist the client in hiring of the contractor, site
engineer, etc.
▪ The architect will typically review contractor working drawings and
other submittals, prepare and issue site instructions, and provide
Certificates for Payment to the contractor.
▪ The architect will be involved in site visits and meetings, overseeing
the construction and signing off on various pieces of work,
negotiating with contractors and dealing with and resolving any
problems that arise.
Importance of architects in the
society
Architects are required for the following reasons:

▪ Maintain a check on the construction practices that are being


followed.
▪ Ensure there is no over exploitation of resources during the
construction project.
▪ Architects are custodians of the built environment.
▪ Ensure there are better and safer built environment for the users
and the public.
▪ Ensure the clients are not being cheated during a construction
project by the contractors, masons, etc.
▪ Ensure environmental safe building policies are being followed.
▪ To educate the client about the potential of a space before its
being developed/ constructed.
▪ Architects create the places that inspire – and where we live out
and realize – our dreams and destiny.
▪ Architects consistently provide people with what is important to
them.
▪ Architects understand the patterns of everyday life. When it
comes to creating urban form, places where people live, work and
play, architects matter.
▪ To give the world a meaning i.e designing buildings which evoke
emotions in the users and public.
ARCHITECTS REGISTRATION

▪ ARCHITECTS ACT

ARCHITECTS REGISTRATION
▪ (1) The Central Government shall, as soon as may be, cause to be
prepared in the manner hereinafter provided a register of
architects for India.
▪ (2) The Council shall upon its constitution assume the duty of
maintaining the register in accordance with the provisions of this
Act.
▪ (3) The register shall include the following particulars, namely :-
a. the full name with date of birth, nationality and residential
address of the architect ;
b. his qualification for registration, and the date on which he
obtained that
qualification and the authority which conferred it ;
c. the date of his first admission to the register;
d. his professional address ; and
e. such further particulars as may be prescribed by rules.
ARCHITECTS REGISTRATION

A person shall be entitled on payment of such fees as may be


prescribed by rules to have his name entered in the register, if he
resides or carries on the profession of architect in India and --
a. holds a recognised qualification.
or b. does not hold such a qualification but, being a citizen of India,
has been engaged in practice as an architect for a period of not less
than five years prior to the date appointed.
▪ After the expiry of two years from the date appointed under sub-
section (2) of section 24, a person who is registered in the register
shall get preference for appointment as an architect under the
Central or State Government or in any other local body or
institution which is supported or aided from the public or local
funds or in any institution recognised by the Central or State
Government.
▪ Where it is shown to the satisfaction of the Registrar that a
certificate of registration has been lost or destroyed, the Registrar
may, on payment of such fee as may be prescribed by rules, issue
a duplicate certificate in the form prescribed by the rules.
▪ A person whose name has been removed from the or where such
person is dead, his legal representative, as defined in clause (11) of
section 2 of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908, shall forthwith
surrender his certificate of registration to the Registrar, and the
name so removed shall be published in the Official Gazette.
▪ The Council may, by order, remove from the register the name of
any architect –

a) from whom a request has been received to that effect, or


b) who has died since the last publication of the register.

▪ When on receipt of a complaint made to it, the Council is of


opinion that any architect has been guilty of professional
misconduct which, if proved, will render him unfit to practice as
an architect, the Council may hold an inquiry in such manner as
may be prescribed by rules.
▪ After holding the inquiry under sub-section (1) and after hearing
the architect, the Council may, by order, reprimand the said
architect or suspend him from practice as an architect or remove
his name from the register or pass such other order as it thinks fit.
Office and its Management
 Office location should be in a prominent and convenient place
for easy accessibility.

 Architects office need to be designed in a functional manner.


 All inmates should get proper ventilation and lighting.
 Care should be taken that no over crowding takes place.
 Architect should himself/herself be methodical, then only he/she
can expect discipline from his office staffs.

 His cabin should bear evidence of his professional status.


 He should arrange appointments with his clients in a proper way
to avoid long waiting time
▪ He should be ready for clients meeting as per the appointment with
all necessary requirements.
▪ Catalogues and samples must be properly arranged.
▪ Sufficient time and care should be allotted for all the office members
▪ Office should posses a good library.
▪ All the equipment must be well maintained
