Adolescent Class on Teenage

Pregnancy and Family Planning

INTRODUCTION
Teenage Pregnancy had been a worldwide issue. Pregnant adolescents are more likely to have preterm or low
birth-weight babies. Babies born to adolescents have higher rates of neonatal mortality. Many adolescent girls
who become pregnant have to leave school. This has long-term implications for them as individuals, their
families and communities. The total number of teenage pregnancy is increasing each year. Philippines is one of
the Asian countries which shares similar situation. While teen pregnancy rates in most countries are declining,
the numbers are rising in the Philippines. According to a United Nations report, the Philippines topped the
regional list of Asian countries with high numbers of teen pregnancies. About 500 Filipino teenagers become
mothers every day. That's about 182,500 teenage mothers every year. In a study conducted by the National
Demographic and Health Survey in 2013, one out of every young Filipino women age 15 to 19 is already a
mother or pregnant with a first child. Therefore, the government in partnership with the different non-
government agencies should exert efforts in resolving this issue. Teenage Pregnancies are often associated with
social development issues such as lack of sufficient education and poverty. Awareness and campaigns should
be raised to lessen its occurrence. In line with this, our organization is planning to conduct an adolescent class
on teenage pregnancy and family planning to address this issue. Through this we hope to raise awareness and
empower our youth to enhance their knowledge on family planning to lessen the occurrence of teenage
pregnancies in our country.
VISION
Family Planning
Our vision is a community where everyone can choose freely whether
and when to have children, and how many: for the benefit of all people
and the community.

Teenage Pregnancy
To bring together all the stakeholders: teens, parents, clergy,
educators, employers and policy makers, as well as health and social
service providers, to ensure that our community is an environment where
teens can make healthy decision for themselves.
MISSION

To provide adequate knowledge about family planning and

teenage pregnancy through health education and to
minimize the risk of unplanned and unwanted pregnancy.
RATIONALE

One in ten young Filipino women age 15-19 has begun childbearing, 8 percent are
already mothers and another 2 percent are pregnant with their first child
according to the results of the 2013 National Demographic and Health Survey
(NDHS). This only shows how rampant teenage pregnancy is. This program is
implemented to prevent and lessen the increasing rate of teenage pregnancy
through inflicting knowledge not just to the teens but also to early adults
regarding teenage pregnancy and family planning.

Duration of the Activity

The month of May is celebrated as Natural Family Planning (NFP) in pursuant to the Department of Health
Department Circular No. 50-A, series of 1995. That aside, we can also include the hormonal, barrier and permanent
type of family planning.
In partnership with the Commission on Population (POPCOM), under their flagship program which is the
Responsible Parenthood and Family Planning (RPFP), gives the utmost importance to the rights of Filipino women by
providing family planning information and services that will enable them to decide what method to use in accordance
to their life aspirations, physical preparedness, physical and social capacities.
Last year Senator Risa Hontiveros had proposed a bill – the Bill of Prevention of Adolescent Pregnancy Act of
2017. It is an act providing for a national policy in preventing teenage pregnancies, institutionalizing social protection
for teenage parents, and providing funds therefor. According to the 2014 data from the Philippine Statistics Authority
(PSA) revealed that every hour, 24 babies are delivered by teenage mothers. Furthermore, in the 2014 Young Adult
Fertility and Sexuality (YAFS) study, more or less 14% Filipino girls aged 15 to 19 are either pregnant for the first time
or are already mothers.
In this regard, the activities that shall be implemented in public high schools shall be done quarterly in a year. So
that young Filipinos will be continuously reminded because the main problem is that there is limited access to sex
education and adolescent sexual and reproduction.
