Review:

Who are the stakeholders in

media production?
At the end of the lesson, the students
will have:
• Identify what is intellectual property,
copy right and fair use;

• Puts into practice their

understanding of the intellectual
property, copy right, and fair use
guidelines.
Do you ever wonder why:
• iTunes chargers you a dollar per song?

• Videos in You Tube of recent episode of

The Walking Dead are quickly taken
down?
What is fair use?
• Fair use is a doctrine of the copy right law,
allowing for the limited use of copyrighted
material without requiring permission from the
copy right holder.

• It permits legal, non-licensed citation or

incorporation of copyrighted material in
another creator`s work using a 4-part balancing
test.
What is Copy Right?
• Copy right is a federal law that gives creators
of media that exclusive rights to copy,
distribute and mash up the things they create
for a limited time.

• As you work on any assignment that includes

digital media( e.g. images, videos, or music) it
is good to practice to make sure you are
abiding by copy right laws..
What is Copy Right?
• Furthermore it refers to the protection
given to the owner of an original work
covering literary works, musical pieces,
paintings, and computer programs,
among others.

• Under the copy rights law, the owner of

the original work is entitled to economic
rights and moral rights.
Privacy:
• Freedom from unauthorized intrusion
• Also called right to privacy
• the concept that one`s personal
information is protected from public
scrutiny
• Social media platforms have incorporated
privacy functions on their websites.
• Blocking, report abusive users
How Does Copyright Work with
Social Media?

• A copyright protects the owner of one kind of

intellectual property (created by an individual
but having no form or substance).
How Does Copyright Work with
Social Media?
• The copyright process has become fairly
simple with traditional works like books,
plays, movies, and theater.

• But copyright is a little more difficult with

the advent of the internet.
How Does Copyright Work with
Social Media?
• For example, bloggers must be aware of what
they write, to avoid copyright, trademark, and
libel issues.

• And before you use an image from the

internet you need to be sure to get a license
or find public domain images.
Social Media and Copyright
• Social media, like Facebook, Twitter, and
Pinterest, allow online posting of material that
may be copyrighted.

• The social media site does not own the work

that has been posted on their site; the
copyright is still retained by the owner.
Social Media and Copyright
• But by agreeing to post works on the site,
you sign an agreement that gives the site
a license to use the work.

• In these cases, the license is given

without payment.
Intellectual Property in the Philippines
• Intellectual property refers
to anything created by
someone, including but not
limited to inventions,
literary works, items
created by artist (artwork,
musical pieces), symbols,
designs, images, pictures,
and even names for
commercial purposes.
Examples:
• Trademarks- the
use of symbols,
words, names,
pictures, designs,
or combination
thereof used by
firms to identify
particular products,
brands or services
• Patents- the use
or manufacture
or the sale of
inventions given
by the
governement
• Design rights- intellectual property right,
protects the shape of a three-dimensional
design

• Domain rights- protects a network
