Conditionals

Types
• Zero Conditional – to talk about the facts
If + Present Simple, Present Simple
If you mix yellow and blue, you get green
• First Conditional – to talk about the events that are probable and real to
happen
If + Present Simple, Future Simple
If the weather is good, I will go for a walk
• Second Conditional – to talk about unreal future events
If + Past Simple, would + infinitive without to
If I had a lot of money, I would move to Spain
Zero Conditional

We use the zero conditional to talk about things that are always or
generally true as a result of an action or a situation.
If my friend has a problem, I always listen.
I always listen if my friend has a problem.
Ex.1. Match halves using the Zero Conditional

1. If you heat water a) he’s dead


2. If the man is not breathing b) it gets rusty

First Conditional

We use the first conditional to talk about possible actions in the future.
If I’m thirsty, I will buy a drink.
We can also use can/could /may/ might/ in the main clause instead of
will.
If you take your phone to school, you might lose it.
We can also use the imperative in the main clause.
If you are hungry, have a sandwich.
Ex.2. Complete the sentences using the correct form of verb from
the brackets (1st Conditional)

Second Conditional
• We use the second conditional:
• To talk about unreal present or future situations , things that are not
happening or will not happen.
-If I had more pocket money, I would spend it on new computer.
• To talk about unlikely present or future situations, things that
probably wont happen.
If I won the lottery, I’d buy a house .
• To give advise :
• If I were you, I would buy that jacket.
We can use could or might in the main clause instead of would.
If I had more money, I could buy some clothes.
• We can use unless instead of if…..but not in any conditinal sentence.
• I can’t help my friend, unless I listen to her problems.
• Unless our team wiins this match, we wont be happy.
• I wouldn’t save my pocket money unless I wanted something special.
