LYMPHATIC SUSPENSION
SPRING “OR” DAMPER….
INTRODUCTION
• Suspension is the term given
to the system of springs shock
absorbers & linkages that connects
to its wheels.
• Serve a dual purpose-
contributing to the vehicle’s
handling over breakers &
braking.
While, Damper is used for
avoiding vibrations.
A damper is a device that deadens,
restrains or depresses.

Goal…
 Comfort
 Contact
 Control
 Cost reduction
 Compact

General Component
• Solid Springs- It is a mechanical device which is typically used to store energy and
subsequently release it, to absorb shock, or to maintain a force between
contacting surfaces.
• Dampeners- it’s a mechanical or hydraulic device designed to absorb
and damp shock impulses. It does this by converting the kinetic energy of the
shock into another form of energy (typically heat) which is then dissipated.
• Ball Joints- Swivel joints that allow control arm and steering knuckel to move up
and down & side to side.
• Control Arm- Movable lever that fastens the steering knuckle to the vehicle’s
body or frame
• Steering knuckle- It provides a spindle

Test load on each spring =2750 N
• Materials on which we Analysis:
 Chromium vanadium steel
Young’s modulus =207000MPa, Poisson ratio =0.27,

Advantages over Hydraulic Spring suspension

• Light in weight.
• Heat dissipation became efficient.
• No need of Nitrox cylinder.

Technical Part
• From design data book k.Mahadevan & Reddy Page no. 169 and 170 fig.11.2
 Calculation of stress over solid spring under 1000 N*m torque, 3000 rpm speed,
radius 5 cm, spring one coil length= 100/n & 300 GPa modulus of rigidity
Tmax will be =5.09MPa, angle of Twist =0 Rad, J=9817480 mm^4
 Calculation of stress over hollow spring with 3.1 cm inner radii & 5 cm outer radii
and under the same load and of same material.
Tmax will be =5.97MPa, angle of Twist =0 Rad, J=8366813.5 mm^4
 Calculation of stress over hollow spring with 3.5 cm inner radii & 5 cm outer radii
and under the same load and of same material.
Tmax will be =6.702MPa, angle of Twist =0 Rad, J=7460301 mm^4
• According to a study a normal bike(hydraullic spring coil) suspension can Wear 90
– 120 psi load while hollow coil spring can wear upto 75 psi load under same
conditions

Theoretical part
• Three type of stresses act on spring coil
 Pure torsional
 Direct torsional
 Combined torsional
• In pure torsional coil spring affect the outer part of spring while core is
essentially unstressed.
• In Direct torsional check out the fig.
• Direct torsional stress don’t occurs
on centre line of X-section, Hence
core is Not really of any use.
• Possibility of buckling Increases due
to these stresses, hence by filling high
Pressure fluid(Fork oil eg.SAE-5,10,15,
ISO-100 etc.) It can be controlled. 10
