KIRIWANDALAGE AND MINDULI MEDAGODA What is nanotechnology? • Nanotechnology is a field of research and innovation concerned with building 'things' - generally, materials and devices - on the scale of atoms and molecules. • 0.1 millimeters=100000 nanometers • In simple words, nanotechnology is the study and development of extremely small things. • A nanometer is about 100 times smaller than human hair! Properties of nanomaterials • Light weight • Durability • Small • Strong What are nanomaterials? • Nanomaterials are made by scientists that study nanoscience. • It is made from the process of rearranging the atomic structure in the inside of a particle. • Nanoparticles are structures, 1 to 100 nanometres (nm) in size, that usually contain only a few hundred atoms. • Some examples are: 1. Fullerenes 2. Diamonds 3. Charcoal Examples of nanostructures • Nanoparticles- prevents autoimmune diseases • Fullerenes- Can be used as solar cells • Buckyballs- Can be used as solar cells • Nanowires-decomposes organic molecules in polluted water • Carbon nanotubes-can be used as a catalyst in a fuel cell • Nanorods- drug delivery (photothermal therapy) Advantages • Faster • Lesser amount of pollutants released • Universal immunity (resistance to toxins) • The use of nanomaterials in vehicles such as aero planes could help save the environment from further damage. • Nanostructured ceramic coatings are more likely to have a much greater toughness Disadvanta ges • Lack of employment in the farming, manufacturing and industrial sectors. • The value of things such as diamond and oil is falling. • Easy accessibility to atomic weapons which can lead to more wars. • Could cause health problems Solar panels and cells since it absorbs heat and light
