Civil Engineering Materials

CE-115

Dr. Muhammad Salik Javaid

SCEE - NUST
What is Civil
Engineering?
 Profession of designing and
executing structural works that
serve the general public, including
bridges, canals, dams, harbors,
lighthouses, roads, tunnels, and
environmental works (e.g., water
supply systems). The modern field
includes power plants, aircraft and
airports, chemical-processing
plants, and water-treatment

facilities.

What is Civil
Engineering?
 Civil engineering today involves
site investigations and feasibility
studies, structural design and
analysis, construction, and facilities
maintenance. The design of
engineering works requires the
application of design theory from
many fields (e.g., hydraulics,
thermodynamics, nuclear physics).

What is Civil
Engineering?
 A branch of engineering that
encompasses the conception, design,
construction, and management of
residential and commercial buildings and
structures, water supply facilities, and
transportation systems for goods and
people, as well as control of the
environment for the maintenance and
improvement of the quality of life.
 Civil engineering includes planning and
design professionals in both the public
and private sectors, contractors,
builders, educators, and researchers.

What is Civil
Engineering?
 Civil engineering is a professional
engineering discipline that deals with the
design and construction of the physical
and natural built environment, including
works such as bridges, roads, canals,
dams and buildings.
 Civil engineering is the oldest
engineering discipline after military
engineering, and it was defined to
distinguish it from military engineering.

What is Civil
Engineering?
 Civil Engineering is nothing but
simple common sense –
however – common sense is
very uncommon

Science, Engineering,
Technology
 Science deals with humans’
understanding of the real world about
them – the inherent properties of space,
matter, energy and their interactions.
 Engineering is the application of
objective knowledge to creation of plans,
designs and means for achieving desired
objectives.
 Technology deals with tools and
techniques for carrying out plans.
