• Hydrogen Ions ↑
• Potassium ↑
• Decreased 2,3-Diphosphoglycerate
• Cittrate → bicarbonate may contribute to metabolic
alkalosis, binding of calcium by citrate could result in
hypocalcemia
Hypothermia
• Febrile
– There is an interaction between recipient antibodies and
antigens present on the leukocytes or platelets of the donor.
The patient’s temperature rarely increases above 38oc, and the
condition is treated by slowing the infusion and administering
antipyretics
• Allergic Reactions
– Increases in body temperature, pruritus, and urticaria
– Treatment often includes intravenous administration of
antihistamines and, in severe cases, discontinuation of the
blood transfusion
• Hemolytic Reactions
– Hemolytic reactions occur when the wrong blood type is
administered to a patient.
– hypotension, the immediate signs (lumbar and substernal pain,
fever, chills, dyspnea, skin flushing)
– The appearance of free hemoglobin in plasma or urine is
presumptive evidence of a hemolytic reaction
– Treatment of acute hemolytic reactions is immediate
discontinuation of the incompatible blood transfusion and
maintenance of urine output by infusion of crystalloid solutions
