PATTERNS OF PARAGRAPH

DEVELOPMENT
PARAGRAPH

• Is a series of sentences or a group of related sentences or


a group of related sentences forming and developing a
unit of thought as a specific part of a composition.
• It is important to plan and organize paragraphs.
Paragraphs are developed and organized in order to
obtain unity of purpose and idea.

PARAGRAPH
DEVELOPMENT
NARRATION

• Describes what, when, and where something


happened.
• It is simply telling a story, usually from the viewpoint
of one person. Many times, the writer is also making
a point as well as recounting events that occurred.
• Narration can be found in any form of literature,
including plays, short stories, poems, novels, or even
jokes. They are considered narration, or narrative, as
long as they tell a story.
EXAMPLE OF NARRATION

• Theo's day began with a shock. As soon as he arrived at


the office that morning, he learned that his best friend
was dead. Wasn't it just twelve hours ago that they were
eating chicken wings and tipping back beer in front of a
baseball game at the Cooper's Bar and Grill? After a
long day of crunching numbers at the office, they
stopped at a bar for a Thursday afternoon happy hour.
They saw a few coworkers there, and before they knew
it, it was closing time. Bill got in a car with someone he
met just that evening and that was the last time Theo
saw him.
DESCRIPTION

• Details what something looks like and


its characteristics.
• Descriptive writing uses sensory writing and includes
vivid and rich details. It portrays certain events,
people, or objects in away that the reader can
visualize what the writer is describing. The writer uses
figurative language, like metaphors and symbolism,
to enhance the sensory experience for the reader.
• Descriptive writing is vivid, colorful, and detailed.
EXAMPLE OF DESCRIPTION

• The waves crashed and danced along the shore,


moving up and down in a graceful and gentle
rhythm like they were dancing.
• Lake Harriet is a great place to swim and relax. In the
summer, the water is warm and clean, and the beaches
are large enough to accommodate groups of people
seeking relief from a midsummer scorcher. In addition to
swimming, visitors to the lake can go canoeing, sailing,
windsurfing, or fishing. The blue water is a refreshing,
tempting sight.
DEFINITION

• Definition answers the question ”what do you mean?” or


what does the word ____ mean?” .
• Definition paragraph tells the reader what term or
concept is being defined.
• Definition may be formal or informal in giving the
definition of a term or concepts.
• The meaning need not necessarily be its dictionary
meaning.
EXAMPLE OF DEFINITION

• Longitudinal dunes are long low ridges of sand that lie


approximately at right angles to the trend of the sand
waves, or parallel to the direction of the wind. Some of
the ridges are almost straight; others are slightly wavy.
They range up to about 10 meters in height and 30
meters in width. Many are more than one and one-half
kilometers long. Both sides of these dunes have
practically the same slope and are usually covered with
grass and shrubs. While the crest is usually bare of
vegetation, on some dunes, even the crest is covered.
Where this occurs, it means that wind action has stopped
on this particular dune.

• Paragraph of exemplification and classification seeks to
support the subject or topic with specific and concrete
examples and classification.
• Provides typical cases or examples of something.

Arizona is large, having an area of 114,000 square miles,
whereas Rhode Island is only about a tenth the size,
having an area of only 1,214 square miles.

example, my hometown, Gridlock, has a population of
only about 10,000 people. Similarly, my college town,
Subnormal, consists of about 11,000, local residents.
CAUSE AND EFFECT

• Details why something happens, what causes


it, what are the effects and how it is related to
something else.

EFFECT
• When water is heated, the molecules move Quickly,
therefore the water boils.
• A tornado blew the roof off the house, and as a
result, the family had to find another place to live.
• Because the alarm was not set, we were late for
work.
PROBLEM AND SOLUTION

• In composition, problem and solution is a method


for analyzing and writing about a topic by
identifying a problem and proposing one or more
solutions.
• A problem-solution essay is a type of argument. "This
sort of essay involves argumentation in that the
writer seeks to convince the reader to take a
particular course of action.
EXAMPLE OF PROBLEM AND
SOLUTION
• Problem:
• Drug abuse causes multiple problems for countries
and communities. The medical and psychological
effects are very obvious. 8ddicts cannot function as
normal members of society. They neglect or abuse
their families, and eventually require expensive or
hospitalization's second effect is on crime. !huge
police resources are needed to fight smuggling and
dealing. criminal gangs and mafia underworlds
develop with the money from drugs.

• Solution:
• However, the menace of drugs can be fought.
Education is the first battle. Children need to be
told at home and in school about drugs. People
need to be aware of the effects so that they can
avoid this problem. A second approach is to
increase police manpower and create effective
laws to stop dealers.
PERSUASION

• Persuasive paragraph is a kind of paragraph that


states your viewpoints about a specific topic and
try to convince the readers and listeners to agree
with your opinion or viewpoint.
EXAMPLE OF PERSUASION

• Immigration contributes to the overall health of the


American economy. Despite recent concerns
related to the costs created by illegal and some
legal immigration to the United States, this country
has largely benefited from the skills, talents, and
ambition that immigrants bring with them.
American businesses gain from a good source of
affordable labor, while town and cities are
revitalized by immigrant families who strengthen
communities through civic participation the
generation of new economic activity.
