COMMUNICATION PROCESS
MEANING OF COMMUNICATION
• Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one place to
another.
• Communication skills form the corner stone of soft skill.

• Communication is the activity of conveying information through the exchange of


thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, visuals, signals, writing, or
behavior. It is the meaningful exchange of information between two or a group of
people.
• Communication includes sending clear and concise message and hearing and
correctly understanding messages which someone is sending to us.
• It also includes fluent speaking, correct writing and body languages.

• Visualizations: Graphs and charts, maps, logos and other visualizations can
communicate messages and is also a part of communication skill.

• Every human being has to essentially & effectively communicate with others.
• Effective communication is the hallmark of one’s education.

COMMUNICATION SKILL
• Communication Skill can be basically categorized into two –

a) Verbal Communication(includes Oral and Writing Skill).


b) Non-Verbal Communication Skill(It includes your Body Language).
• Approaches to develop better communication skill : – (Explain each
point as explained in class)
i) Listening Practice
ii) Reading Practice
iii) Writing Practice

iv) Speaking Practice


v) Thinking Practice.
VERBAL COMMUNICATION SKILL
 Verbal Communication is all about what we say, which is an

important way of getting our message across.

 The words that we choose can make a big difference to whether other

people understand us. Consider for example, communicating with a


young child, or with someone who does not speak our own language
very well. You need to use simple language, short sentences, and
check understanding regularly. It is quite different from a
conversation with an old friend whom you have known for years,
and with whom you may not even need to finish your sentences.

• Verbal communication is one way for people to communicate face-to-face. Some of the key

components of verbal communication are sound, words, speaking, and language. Verbal
communication is generally thought as spoken language. We express ourselves through
words.

• TYPES OF VERBAL COMMUNICATION

1. Face to Face Discussions, Speeches, Television, Radio, Telephone conversations, Seminars, Videos etc.
Our tone of voice, pronunciation, word choice are all things we choose in order to talk. These things
make a conversation have it`s personality. When we are angry we talk in a certain way, when we are
happy we choose other words to express ourselves.

2. Verbal communication also includes the written word. Written includes emails, books, letters,
magazines, newspapers, notes, faxes, written announcements, pamphlets etc. Anything that is written is
also verbal communication. Oral communication has also besides real words, mere grunts, cries,
whimpers that people make. Each sound we make can be interpreted and seen as a certain language.
Communicating with others is done more easy and it`s also more easy to understand if the two people

• Verbal Communication can be further categorized into –

i) Formal Communication: Also termed as official communication, it is


a type of communication in which the sender follows a pre-defined
channel to transmit the information to the receiver is known as formal
communication.

ii) Informal Communication: Most commonly known as grapevine, the


type of communication in which the sender does not follow any pre-
defined channels to transmit the information is known as informal
communication.

• EXAMPLES OF VERBAL COMMUNICATION:-

• ORAL COMMUNICATION - The most apparent type of verbal communication is oral.

Speeches, presentations and announcements are all forms of verbal communication. Most
communication models also include verbal feedback from the receiver, which may be in the
form of questions or comments.

• MEDIATED COMMUNICATION - Its contains example like internet, television,

telephone, emails.

• TO ENHANCE COMMUNICATION include-

• ASK QUESTION :- 1. Questions are used for clarity and to inspire more conversation.

2. Questions are a verbal communication strategy that can help to ensure clarity and
accuracy of the messages being exchanged. e.g.. - one person may define the word
“successful” differently than another person.
• PREMEDIATE - Think about what you’re going to say before you say it.

• REPEAT - Repeating the message back in your own words will help your perspective
and evaluation of the message.
• USE NONVERBALS - The use of nonverbal with verbal communication helps to
deliver the message more effectively. Nonverbals that are commonly used to increase
verbal communications effectiveness are visual aids, body language and charts. For
example, if you’re verbally telling someone how to change the oil in their car, you
should demonstrate the action in order to provide accuracy to the recipient.

NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION
MEANING & TYPES OF NON-VERBAL
COMMUNICATION SKILL
• Nonverbal communication includes all unwritten and unspoken messages, both intentional and

unintentional.

• TYPES OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION SKILL : –

1. Chronemics: The use of time in communication is chronemics, which speaks about the personality of the sender / receiver
like punctuality, the speed of speech, etc.

2. Vocalics: The volume, tone of voice and pitch used by the sender for communicating a message to the receiver is known as
vocalics or paralanguage.

3.Haptics: The use of touch in communication is the expression of feelings and emotions.

4. Kinesics: It is the study of the body language of a person, i.e., gestures, facial expressions, etc.

5.Proxemics: The distance maintained by a person while communicating with others, communicates about the relationship of
the person with others like intimate, personal, social and public.

6. Artifacts: The appearance of a person speaks about his personality, i.e. by way of clothing, carrying jewellery, lifestyle,
etc. This kind of communication is known as artifactual communication.

7.Sign Languages : Use of hands and fingers to express emotion.

writing.

• Is a creative activity, which comes through stimuli produced by the

• A person to have quality communication skills must possess the

knowledge of non-verbal communication.

• As compared to words and vocal variety non-verbal communication

matters a lot.
