ETHICS
The publication of an article in a peer-reviewed journal is an essential building
block in the development of a coherent and respected network of knowledge.
It is a direct reflection of the quality of work of the author and the institutions
that support them. Peer-reviewed articles support and embody the scientific
method. It is therefore important to agree upon standards of expected ethical
behavior.
Topics to consider when publishing:
• Authorship of paper
• Originality and Plagiarism
• Multiple, Redundant or Concurrent publication
• Salami Slicing
• Acknowledement of sources
• Disclosure and conflicts of result
• Fundamental errors in published work
Authorship Of Paper
• Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant
contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the
reported study. Transparency about the contributions of authors is
encouraged, for example in the form of a Credit author statement.
• Three types of authorship are considered unacceptable:
 Ghost
 Guest
 Gift
Originality And Plagiarism
• One of the most common types of publication misconduct is plagiarism–
when one author deliberately uses another's work without permission, credit,
or acknowledgment. Plagiarism takes different forms, from literal copying to
paraphrasing some else's work
• Types of plagiarism which are done intentionally or unintentionally
 Literal Copying
 Substantial Copying
 Paraphrasing
Multiple, Redundant or Concurrent Publication

• Simultaneous submission occurs when a person submits a paper to different

publications at the same time, which can result in more than one journal
publishing that particular paper.
• Duplicate/multiple publication occurs when two or more papers, without full
cross-reference, share essentially the same hypotheses, data, discussion
points, and/or conclusions. This can occur in varying degrees: literal
duplication, partial but substantial duplication, or even duplication by
paraphrasing.
Salami Slicing
• The “slicing” of research that would form one meaningful paper into several
different papers is called "salami publication" or "salami slicing“.
• Unlike duplicate publication, which involves reporting the exact same data in
two or more publications, salami slicing involves breaking up or segmenting a
large study into two or more publications. These segments are referred to as
"slices" of a study.
Acknowledgement Of Sources
Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must always be given.
Fundamental Errors in Published Work
When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own
published work, it is the author's obligation to promptly notify the journal
editor or publisher and cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the paper.
Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)
• As a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) the journal
will follow the COPE guidelines on how to deal with potential acts of
misconduct.
• COPE provides leadership in thinking on publication ethics, practical
resources to educate and support members, and offers a professional voice in
current debates.
