1. Verbal sentences
A sentence that the predicate is a verb
Example : a. My mother works at the hospital
b. They bring notebook to the office
c. Sinta wears a new gloves today
d. Andri and Ita use white dress in
this party
The nominal sentence
The sentence that the predicate is not a verb.
Example :
- Anita is an analist
- My friends enjoy this lesson
- Dita is so sad
SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE
In general , the simple present tense expreses
events or situation that always exist, usually,
habitually, they exist now, have existed in the
past and probably will exist in the future
Example :
1. The sun rises in the east
2. I have breakfast in the morning
3. She always listens to the music
4. It snows in the Alaska
SIMPLE PAST
At one particular time in the past, this happened.
It began and ended in the past
Example :
It snowed yesterday
She watched television this morning
We went to Surabaya last week
Anton brought the novel three days ago
Error Analysis
1. It ( snow ) in Alaska
2. Water ( consist ) of hydrogen and oxygen
3. Most animals ( kill ) only for food
4. I ( recognize, not ) that man
5. He always ( eat, not ) a sanwich for lunch
6. Rudi ( need ) a pen right now
7. My classes ( begin ) at eight
8. The world ( to be ) round
9. The bird ( have ) a beautiful sound
10. One of my friends ( go ) to Amerika
PRESENT PROGESSIVE
It is expresses an activity that is in progress at the
moment of speaking. It began in the past, is
continuing at present and will probably end at
some point in the future.
Example : John is speaking right now
I need an umbrella because it is
raining
Richard and Ann are speaking on the
telephone
Use either simple present and present progessive
1. Diana can’t come to the phone because she ( wash ) her hair
2. Rika ( wash ) her hair every other day or so
3. Kathy ( sit, usually ) in front row during class, but today she (
sit ) in the last row.
4. Please be quiet. I ( try ) to concentrate.
5. ( Lock,you,always) the door to your apppartment when you
leave?
6. I wrote to my friend last week. She hasn’t answered my letter
yet. I ( wait,still) for a replay
7. After three days of rain. I’m glad that the sun (shine) again
today.
8. Every morning the sun (shine) in my bedroom window and
(wake) me up.
9. Look! It (snow)
10. It’s beautiful! This is the first time I’ve ever seen snow. It
(snow,not) in my country.
PAST PROGESSIVE
It was in progess at a particular time in the past. It
probably continued. Both action occurred at the
same time but one action began earlier and was in
progess when the other action occured
Example :
1. He was sleeping when we arrived
2. I was walking down the street when it began to rain
3. While I was walking down the street, it began to rain.
4. Last year at this time, I was attending school
Use simple past or past progessive
1. I’m sitting in the class right now. I (sit) in class
at the exact same time yesterday.
2. I don’t want to go to the zoo today because it’s
raining. The same thing happened yesterday. I
(want,not) to go to the zoobecause it (rain).
3. I (call) Roger at nine last night, but he (be,not) at
home. He (study) at the library.
4. I (hear,not) the thunder during the storm last night
because I (sleep).
5. It was beautiful yesterday when he went for a walk in
the park. The sun (shine). A cool breeze (blow). The
birds (sing).
6. My mother and sister (argue) about something when I
(walk) into the room.
7. I got a package in the mail. When I (open) it, I
(find) a surprise
8. Tommy went to his friends’ house, but the boys
(be, not) there. They (play) soccer.
9. Stanley ( climb ) the stairs when he ( trip ) and
( fall ), luckily, he ( hurt, not ) himself.
10. While Mrs. Emerson ( read ) the little boy a
story, he ( fall ) asleep, so she ( close )the book
and the book quietly ( tiptoe ) out of the room
PRESENT PERFECT
The present perfect expresses the idea that
something happened before now, at
unspecified time in the past.
If there is a specific mention of time, the simple
past is used
Example :
1. They have moved into a new apartment.
2. I have already seen that movie
3. Have you ever visited Mexica?
The present perfect also expresses the
repetition of an activity before now.
Example :
1. I have had four test this so far semester
2. I have written my wife a letter every other day
for the last two weeks
3. I have flown on an airplane many times
This tense also expresses situation that began
in the past and continuous to the present, when
used with for and since.
Example :
1. I have been here since seven o’clock
2. We have been here for 2 hours
3. I have had this same pairs of shoes for 3
years
