Weather and

Hydrology
What is weather?
What is the difference
between weather and
climate?
Things That make up our weather
• sunshine • blizzards
• rain • ice storms
• cloud cover • thunderstorms
• winds • steady rains fro
• hail m a cold front o
• snow r warm front
• sleet • excessive heat
• freezing rain • heat waves and
more.
• flooding
Different types of weather
• Clouds • Sleet
• Dust storm • Snow
• Fog • Sun

Rain and weather monitoring system
used by PAGASA

DOST-ASTI developed and deploye

d a network of Automated Weather
Stations (AWS) and Automated Rai
n Gauges (ARG) to monitor real-tim
e weather changes occurring in spe
cific localities all over the country.

These rain and weather monitoring

system complement PAGASA's we
ather monitoring facilities for purpo
ses of information gathering and es
tablishment of baseline data, foreca

What is Hydrology?
What Hydrologist do?
The subject of hydrology
mainly involves:
1. Assessment of catchment rainfall;
2. Assessment of dependable flow;
3. Design flood computations for safet
y of hydraulic structures;
4. Assessment of losses; and
5. Calculation of useful life and capaci
ty of reservoirs.
Application in Engineering:
Success of any water resources
development project depends on
timely and sufficient availability of
water. Naturally proper assessme
nt of this natural resource assum
es great importance. By assessm
ent we try to know in detail from
where the resource comes, wher
e it goes, at what time or when it
comes and how much of it is reall
y available.
The practical applications of the knowled
ge of hydrology are the following:
• Peak flow and future conditions of flow, at
any point in the drainage valley can be cor
rectly estimated for any basin or area.
• Spillway capacity can be accurately desig
ned by estimating design flood.
• Design of river training work is facilitated.
• Dependable yields from the stream for ge
neration of hydroelectric power can be cal
culated.
• Water supply to township and sewerage s
chemes can be properly designed.
• Water resources account of a river basin c
an be prepared.
The end.

Hydrology is the science that enc
ompasses the occurrence, distrib

f the waters of the earth and their
relationship with the environment
within each phase of the hydrolog
