 Disk Operating System
• In the 1980s or early 1990s , the operating system that
shipped with most PCs was a version of the Disk operating
system (DOS) created by
Microsof MS-DOS.
• MS-DOS is a disk operating system for IBM PC compatible.

DOS is the abbreviation of Disk Operating System. It is an

operating system in personal computer. Dos is the part of
computer operating system that controls and manage
files and programs are stored on disk .In its days, it was
easily the most popular operating system in the world.

 Types of DOS Command
• There are two types Dos commands.
1. Internal commands
a) DIR command -Syntax ( C:\>DIR Enter)
b) MD command- Syntax (C:\>MD<Directory name>Enter)
c) Del command – Syntax (C:\>Del<file name>Enter)
d) Copy con command – Syntax (C:\>copy con<file name>Enter)
e) Rename command – Syntax (C:\>Rename<old file name><New file name>Enter)

2. External commands
a) X copy command- Syntax ( C:\><Source directory><target dir.> Enter)
b) Tree command - Syntax ( C:\>Tree Enter)
c) Mode command -Syntax ( C:\>Mode Enter)
d) CHKDSK command -Syntax ( C:\>CHKDSK Enter)

 MS-DOS Versions
• MS-DOS 1 ( 1981)
• The original version of MS-DOS. This was a renamed version of QDOS
which had been purchased by an upstart company called Microsof.
• MS-DOS 2 (1983)
• This added support for IBM’s 10 MB hard disk, directories and double-density
5.25″ floppy disks with capacities of 360 KB.
• MS-DOS 3 (1984)
• Support for high-density (1.2 MB) floppy disks and 32 MB hard disks
was added.
• MS-DOS 4 (1988)
• This version provided XMS support, support for partitions on hard disks
up to 2 GB and a graphical shell. It also contained a large number of bugs
and many programs refused to run on it.
• MS-DOS 5 (1991)
• This version also added support for IBM’s new 2.88 MB floppy disks. An
improved BASIC interpreter and text editor were included, as was
a disk cache, an undelete utility and a hard-disk partition-table backup
program.

MS-DOS 6.2 (1993)

Extra security was built into DoubleSpace following complaints of data loss. A
new disk checker, SCANDISK, was also introduced, as well as improvements to
DISKCOPY and Smart Drive.

MS-DOS 7.0 (1997)

This version is part of OEM Service Release 2 and later of Windows 95. The main
change is support for FAT 32 hard disks, a more efficient and robust way of
storing data on large drives.

 The Main Function Of DOS

1.Configuration-configuration .sys is a text file containing DOS

commands that tell the operating system how the computer is initially set
up.
2.File management-The term file management functions refers to the
function used to manage files, such as creating, opening, deleting,etc.
3. Directory management-In term of directory management dos using for
make a directory and move directory ,change etc.
4. Disk management-In this term function refers to format of disk and
showing free space for other file or directory.

• Definition
DOS (Disk Operating System) are simple text command operating systems that
were popular from 1981 to 1995 and Windows is a range of graphical interface
operating systems that are developed and sold by Microsof .
